Kid on a leash?!

I live in a gated community and on my way out just now I saw a woman walking her kid on a leash!! he was probably about 2 or 3. I swear it freaked me out because he was pulling her, like a dog would! Chat Icon

That's probably why she is using it -- kids are quick to get away. I am sure it gives the parent peace of mind and keeps the child safe.

Re: Kid on a leash?!

I've seen that before and at first I was shocked, but in a crowded place like Disney it could be practical.

There are a lot of predators out there..it's a sad state of affairs though when you have to leash your kid.

Jeez, she was pulling the kid like a dog? Chat Icon

Re: Kid on a leash?!

like a leash around the kids neck?

Or a harness, where it's attached to the kid's wrist or around their chest?

They're pretty common...and I don't think I would use one on my kid, but never say never - they serve a definite purpose, especially if you're running after more than one toddler.

Re: Kid on a leash?!

before I had a child I never agreed on moms putting kids on a "leash". But now I see how there are many kids who run away from the parents in the stores, in parking lots, streets. If you kid does not listen, and you feel safer with him on a leash. Then so be it IMO.

it was a harness around his chest. if my DH saw that he would get so mad. I just know him. he grew up in a military house where both parents were pretty strict. he and his 2 brothers were always well behaved. he cannot stand to see kids these days throw tantrums or on the flip side, parents screaming at their kids in public.

Re: Kid on a leash?!

I know its got to be weird to see that but a perfect example was the other day Im in IKEA and this little boy was running around and well, his parents should of been keeping on eye on him more and sure enough, you hear her yelling his name cause he went off and far. She did find him eventually. Thank gosh.

I have seen them around the wrist of the children and it does have enough slack that he/she can walk around. I dont think that pulling them is the idea...thats not cool.

My mom used to harness my brother to things- his high chair, etc. He was a big daredevil and it was the only way she could keep him from hurting himself. They called him Houdini when he was little because without the harness he'd always find a way out of his highchair, and he was fast!

My friend, her nephew and I saw a kid on a leash in the mall once, and her nephew said to us, "Look, a pet baby!" Chat Icon

Re: Kid on a leash?!

I find it odd a parent would put a kid on a leash...maybe if they did not give the kid so much sugar the kid would not be hyper and running all over the place, therefore not need the leash? Chat Icon

I always thought it was strange but know that I have a child, I will take every precaution I can to make sure that no one will take him.

You might be a strict parent but that doesn't mean that your child will always listen. They are just children.

I have all intentions of getting one. It just takes a second for a child to be abducted or run off.

Children can be hyper without having too much sugar. Some children might have behavioral issues also and need to have this for their own safety!

Re: Kid on a leash?!

hahahaha, this thread is funny. My mom used a leash all the time...why? because she had 7 freaking kids to watch. It not only kept them from hurting themselves, but enabled her to keep ALL of her children safe. Don't knock it til you are in a situation with a kid that might need it. It really isin't such a bad thing!

The only reason why you see leashes less these days are because people use strollers instead to buckle themselves in.

My kids don't run off on me (not to say they never have). I'd rather see a kid like that leashed rather than hurt or killed while he ran into the street.

My mother used to have a harness for us, and that was 35 years ago!!! My sister had a thing that she tied around her DDs wrist when at the beach so she wouldn't go too far. She never had to use a harness, but my nieces are really good at holding our hands. If she had to, I know she would.

I completely agree. I used to be against them but after seeing how a child (a 5 year old) was abducted in front of her mother at a walmart (her mother turned around for a second to grab something off a shelf) in Maine last month, I am all for them. IMHO, I could not give a flying flick about "how horrible" others think it is to "leash" your child. Think about that mother who child is abducted, if she had her "leashed" the predator would not have even tried to take her. We are living in a different world then when we all grew up and although it is sad that children have to be put in a harness to keep them safe, I would rather be safe than sorry.

Do you have a child? JMO, I bet you would feel differently once you have one.
