Just For Fun...What is your ethnicity and...
what are some typical dishes? I'm always looking to try new foods.
I was born in NY but my parents are from Colombia and Puerto Rico
Typical dishes are:
Rice and beans
Tostones (double fried plantains)
Pernil (pork shoulder-seasoned and baked for ~6 hours-very yummy)
Sancocho (Hearty stew made different ways but usually with beef, chicken, plantains, yucca, yautia, potatoes and corn) Get ready for bed after eating this
These are just a few but a good start

I'm a mutt and I cook like it! I kind of wish that we did some more ethnic cooking but growing up, my mom didn't really cook and my grandmother experimented with all different foods. The only thing that I make that resembles my heritage is Italian meals.

Re: Just For Fun...What is your ethnicity and...
I am irish, norwegian, french, and welsh/english by blood. my stepfather who raised me is italian and puerto rican, my husband is central american
I would say I switch back and forth mostly between hispanic (both caribbean and mezo american) and italian dishes, though I do enjoy cooking foods from all over the world, especially places I have traveled to. unfortunately my norwegian grandmother passed away before I could learn many of her reciples (my mom never really cooked with her)
we do a lot of chorizo, black beans, pink beans, rice, sancocho, guacamole
I do pork chops a few different ways..one more reminiscent of my PR grandma with recaito, mojo etc and another french style with dijon and apple cider.
I make couscous, brats with sauerkraut, patatas bravas, chinese stir fry's, and japanese teryaki.
If I had to say what I felt most comfortable and most prolific at in terms of ethnic foods, I would say italian. I was thisclose to going to culinary school speicializing in italian cooking and regional recipes from all over that delicious country are constantly gracing our table.
I make a pretty great bolognese, as well as tomato sauce, both meat and marinara...and I am known for my lasagna and other baked dishes.
I am good at risotto, traditional seafood stews, other traditional soups, and I am sure a few other things my husband would remember before I do.
overall though, I truly enjoy food from all over the world and I am happiest when trying out new spice additions and flavor combos.

Re: Just For Fun...What is your ethnicity and...
I'm American. My bloodlines are Irish and Danish - but the main influence of my parents was location. My dad was a boy in the south so he had an affinity for Southern foods - but he also did a lot of training after boarding school so he picked up influences everywhere - we grew up eating Spanish, Italian, French, Greek and African foods pretty often. He was always testing and experimenting with something. My mother grew up with a Polish nanny and had some influence there. My dad's best friend was from Burma and I spent a lot of time learning how to appreciate and make Asian and Indian fusion dishes from him. I guess I really am a food mutt!

Re: Just For Fun...What is your ethnicity and...
My parents are both Cuban - I was born in the U.S.
My cooking reflects a variety of cultures and tastes. I cook a lot of italian, american, asian, mexican and cuban food.
Some typical Cuban dishes are:
Black beans and rice Roast pork (lechon) Arroz con pollo (yellow rice with chicken) Ropa Vieja Picadillo Fried sweet plantains tostones Different bean stews ( garbanzo, split peas etc.) Carne con papa (a beef stew with potatoes) Chicken fricasee Mariquitas (plantain chips) Yuca (either boiled or fried)
Sone tips about Cuban cooking: Cuban food IS NOT spicy. The main spices used (aside from garlic and onions) are oregano, cumin, bay leaves, salt and pepper. ANy recipe for any of the above the calls for cayenne pepper, paprika or any type of pepper (other than bell peppers) is frankly - NOT CUBAN.
Sorry - it is just a HUGE pet peeve of mine - also when people think Cuban food is similar to Mexican food. I love Mexican food but it is completely different.

Re: Just For Fun...What is your ethnicity and...
My background is Italian, Irish, and Swiss, but I only borrow from the Italian in my cooking. DH's background is Greek and Italian. I usually make Italian and Greek dishes, lasagna, broccoli rabe with chicken sausage over pasta, breaded chicken cutlets with spinach over pasta, chicken souvlaki, chickpea salad, cous cous, bifteki (greek burgers). But I also make a lot of tex-mex yellow rice, black beans, chilli rellenos, marinated skirt steak, etc. We have a pretty eclectic menu.

Re: Just For Fun...What is your ethnicity and...
I'm Colombian. Some of the stuff I grew up on includes:
yellow rice grilled steak sweet plantains tostones pernil (pork shoulder) chorizo (kind of sausage) yuca sancocho (soup) tamales (meat and rice stuffed in a cornmeal patty and then steamed) steak and onions mondongo soup (which is made with tripe - which is disgusting to most but I grew up on the stuff ) arepas with cheese (a breakfast must have) empanadas (beef patties - one of my favorites!)
In general I cook a variety of foods. I always love to try new stuff. But the majority of what I make is spanish and italian (DH is italian).

African American
I don't really cook anything relating specifically to my culture I remember growing up and I hated "Soul" food. I didn't like black eye peas, potato salad, collard greens, hamhocks, etc. I did like fried chicken though, but I don't cook anything fried. I do cook many cultural dishes, just not my own.

Italian and Irish.
My mom is Italian and a wonderful cook and while she makes awesome Italian food, she is 2nd generation Italian and more Brooklyn Italian than Napoletan
My mom cooks asian (various types), spanish, greek, the few Irish dishes that exist .
So I grew up eating everything and loving everything.
I cook everything also.
We are American and really enjoy all cuisines. I would say I cook Italian most often.

LOVE everything on this list (except mondongo-just never got used to the taste).
FYI Colombian empanadas are totally different from jamaican beef patties (taste wise) in case anyone was wondering.
And for breakfast theres nothing like huevos pericos con arepas y chocolate caliente.....unless you're dominican like DH and then it would be mangu con salchichon y queso frito
