Jobs report

Friday's jobs report, showing the US economy added 266,000 jobs in April instead of the 1 million economists were expecting.

I have friends and neighbors begging for workers....but no one wants to work. I see it on social media groups all the time, office jobs, manual labor, restaurants, trades, you name it. A lot of “off the books” going on just to get people to work.

The additional federal money needs to end. Watch how quickly people will take jobs.

My husband cannot find a worker. They all want BIG money per hour and expect breakfast and lunch and to be home by 5pm. Many of his friends are in the same boat.

Yup they are getting the extra money and don’t want to go back to work.
I would think since the numbers are much lower, Biden would be concerned and do something. Instead we spend our time bribing people to get the vaccine by having a concert tonight. SMH

Our landscaper actually told us he can no longer cut our grass anymore because he can’t get workers. He had to slash his business and since were the only ones in our neighborhood who use him we got the axe.

Jobs report

Several small businesses in my town can't find workers and have to close. This is the Democrat's plan: crush small business and make people dependent on the government. When people depend on the government for handouts, they'll keep voting Democrat, and the cycle continues. It's sad.

If an employer is offering decent wages and benefits, for a reliable position (not temporary) and for one that isn’t solely commission-based, they will have no issue attracting an abundance of candidates.

If an employer is having issues with no one applying, they aren’t offering anything near decent.

This.

I think if a company is complaining about not being able to fill positions, then that‘s an interesting way for a company to admit they are paying very low wages.

Not necessarily true. I just watched the local news and a restaurant around the area was offering more money and still can’t get people to work.
People are making more money on unemployment so they would rather take that.
My one child who got laid off when the company they worked for closed their doors because of Covid was making more on unemployment than I was working full time at one point last year.
Still right now they are making more than if they would have a part time job. Schooling is the reason for not working right now as they have no issue working.

People, especially part timers are making more just sitting at home on unemployment.

There’s a few things going on:

-More women left the workforce than men during the pandemic due to inadequate childcare in the country.

-Places like Best Buy screwed over their workers while the CEO is now making 400k more than the average worker because Best Buy laid off a bunch of workers and/or cut hours so employees wouldn’t qualify for health insurance. This happened in many companies across the country.

-Unemployment isn’t a hand out. It’s an insurance policy you pay into with each pay period. When you get into a car accident and you get a check from your insurance company, you don’t refer to it as a handout.

Also this:
"We have to pay our CEO $20 million or he'll quit to go somewhere else!!! It's basic supply and demand."

[can't find anyone to work minimum wage jobs with no benefits]: "There's nothing we can do!”

I highly doubt they are getting rich off of unemployment.

It says a lot about the quality of the jobs they were working at then. The system was broken before this pandemic. The pandemic is just bringing it more to light now.

Unemployment should be giving the bare minimum to get by, and it often isn‘t enough.

And someone mentioned how the work force has changed and childcare, etc. That‘s a big factor.

Are people taking advantage? Sure. But I don‘t think that is the majority.

The restaurant industry is a whole other story.

What kind of benefits does your husband offer and what is considered “big” money?

I still think if you’re making more unemployed then you weren’t making a fair and decent wage with proper benefits to begin with. Similarly, if someone is making more than me on unemployment, I’m not being paid fairly.

Many people love having a union (teachers, police, electricians, etc) but then don’t understand why people don’t want to work for unfair wages and zero benefits.

I just want people to be paid well and be taken care of. Happy employees who are treated well and feel good about their jobs are able to function better in society.

Max with taxes taken out was almost $900 a week. More than many made working.
It is a huge thing here in the states as many states are starting to cut the extra unemployment. One wants to give a sign on bonus to get a job. Sad.

With the $600, max would be almost $900 a week in NY. Max now (this is all WITH taxes taken out) is almost $700.

He cant compete with many unlicensed workers going on their own and charging dirt cheat to mow lawns. He had to up his price 2 dollars to offset the increasing gas prices and his materials have gone up. Some understand, and some dont and drop him. Oh well!

Re: Jobs report

If you cannot find someone willing to work for the amount you want to pay, then you need to pay more. You will likely raise prices to match having to pay more money to the employee and the fact that many durable goods have drastically inflated prices this year. I expect inflation to increase a lot this year.

My husband gives all his guys a raise each year. You dont understand, some of these guys (new hires) are asking a lot per hour, or want to be paid a lot per hour with little experience, and want to be provided meals? Seriously.

What benefits does he give? What are they asking for per hour and what is normal for that line of work?

All the degrees in the world can’t change the fact that people aren’t going to work part time for pennies, often times paying for their own materials (cell, uniform, vehicle) and no benefits.

It’s not companies that take care of employees that are having issues hiring. It’s sectors that tend to exploit their workers...

One winner was on TV stating he would rather pay his employees $500 to get the vaccine rather than offer sick time .. he was smug and sounds like a total asshat. Offering sick time is part of the responsibility of being an employer.

Actually it depends what type of employer you are. For example, I worked in fast food as a teenager. If I called out sick, I didn't get paid. Many jobs should not offer sick time. Also, when I moved into the professional world and worked at very large companies, we were allotted a certain amount of sick, personal and vacation days. It was not unlimited sick time. If I had gotten severely ill I would have had to go on short term disability.

I was a small business owner. I could barely afford to pay my employees minimum wage. In fact I ended up losing money. But people are constantly complaining about the high cost of things. You want your lawn mowed but you certainly don't want to pay a lot to have it done. If people put their money where their mouth is and pay for the cost of providing everyone a living wage and benefits that would be great but I am fairly certain with the amount of ******** on this board about the high COL on LI as it is, that's not the case. Not every business is looking to make millions and exploit their employees in the process. I'm guessing you have never owned and operated a small business.
