job interview.UPDATE

which I hate, so stupid. I read two thoughts regarding the past salary HX.

One says put a check to show I didn't forget to fill it in, which could backfire.

I already have the interview, I dont think they would cancel because I did not write it in.

I dont believe they ever need to know my $$ HX

thoughts?? does anyone ever leave it out

Update 12/12/2016: I received the job offer. So odd it's near the place of my car accident over the summer and cancer check that day.
I am seriously considering the position as it pays, 20 % more than Im making now, longer hours, less PTO days.

PS no new cancer growths, one enlarged lymph node since last yr, not getting larger or smaller

Re: HR help regarding job interview on Monday. I have to fill out an application

if you already have the interview then I think its ok ..they can ask you in the interview.

on the application prior to getting an interview some companies (like the one I work for) dump your application if its not filled in.

Peainapod, so dumb. It should be about my abilities. The company knowing actually gives them a step up on negotiating.

The only thing is, they are insisting I have it filled out and handed in by tomorrow so they can look it over

whats the reason they dump it?

Some positions have attract a people with a large range of experience. When we make that question mandatory its because we don't want to waste anyone's time. I don't want to bring you in for a 40k job if you are looking for 60k.

asking the salary I am looking for is one thing, I gave them a ranger. Asking my past salaries to me is nonsense. Most people are looking to move up in income. In fact I bumped my range up from what I am making now.

I am leaving that part blank and hope for the best.

Also, they told me the interview will take 2 hrs they are first going to test my computer skills. Already Im annoyed lol

Re: HR help regarding job interview on Monday. I have to fill out an application

If they look it over while they are interviewing you, they are going to ask. You'll have to come up with a # or give them the actual number on the spot. That may be more uncomfortable then just putting the # on the application.

It's just a negotiating tool. If you are looking for a specific range, what you made at your last job shouldn't matter to YOU at all. If they low ball you, this isn't the job for you.

Good luck!

If you already gave them a range, then that's in the range they are willing to pay. Companies expect you to ask for a bump from one job to another. I'm not quite sure why you're so upset about filling in your salary history, unless you're asking for a crazy big increase.

Not only do companies ask for your current salary these days, they want copies of your past paystubs to prove it. As weird as it is, I think it is fairly normal these days.

Yep. Before we can send an offer letter we request a W2 and your last pay stub.
We do salary verification on every employee we hire or we don't hire them.

We don't use it against you, we understand that people will want to move to a new job for more money, and we take that into account.

But we also don't want to pay you $100 K when you are making $40 K now.

I just dont feels it my employers business. They do use it as a tool against you. They don't tell you what they are offering before hand but they have all the info.

They are also trying to make it illegal to ask what some is making.

I also don't agree with having to show my prior tax returns, again, it really should be none of their business, my opinion.

legally they cant ask if you are legal to work here but they do.

this part makes no sense to me. If a person qualifications are good and they are making less than 100, 000. People look for new jobs for pay increase, I don't see the connection. To not offer a person a job because they were making 40,000-50,000 and your offering 100,000. My last company was horrible when it came to pay thanks to the UNION.

We always give a bump to come over, to attract good candidates, etc but generally upper management will balk at a $60K increase for a similar job. Yes, if you are applying for a job and have the skills and experience and it pays $100K, then you would get it. However, in general, if you have the skills and experience for that $100K job, you aren't making $40k right now.
I've never seen that.

so, if your company liked a candidate, and was going to offer them the job, but saw on their tax returns they only earned $50,000 would they not offer the job? I don't believe past salary is a true indicator of skill and knowledge and what someone should be paid. Not every company pays the same way. Perhaps someone took a lower position bc they needed that job and had no choice. I thinks much of it is BS. In my field agencies pay horrible, state pays better. Some company's have unions which never highlight the persons skill, no matter who you are you get the same pay.

I'm not saying it's right. What I am saying is we were hard pressed to give someone $10k over what they were making recently. Upper management fought us tooth and nail.
Unfotuneatly companies are in it to make money and are cheap as shit sometimes. It's the sad reality. I have had to pass on a few candidates who I liked because we couldn't make the salary work. Or they wanted more than the job would pay for their skill. It sucks, but it's life.

Again,, if they have the skills and the experience our fight is easier.

But in general, I have yet to see someone who was qualified for a $100k job (looking at their resume, years experience, qualifications etc) that was making $45- $50 K.
Can it happen? I guess. But it's rare.

Different numbers but same concept-my dh worked for one of the lowest paying companies in his field and switched to one of the highest paying. Unfortunately, dh had done 2 internal title switches at his old company, but due to overlapping pay grades wasn't given a raise. He was flat out told that as an external hire he would have made more than he did. When he switched, he's still the lowest paid in his group, but it's much more in line with what he should be paid for his skill set and education. Thankfully they didn't look at a w2

i have no idea. my DH applied for a job here a few weeks ago, and my boss said to make sure he fills in the salary history on the online application b/c they will toss it otherwise. Honestly Im not sure if you can even bypass it on the online application.

nothing surprises me anymore about job hunting. its hard out there.

Re: HR help regarding job interview on Monday. I have to fill out an application

It's standard practice to ask for salary history and old pay stubs.

HR needs to verify that you were, in fact, employed at your last place of employment and that you were making what you said you did.

I've seen people not get hired bc they lied about their previous salary.

It makes an employer wonder if you are lying about your experience and skills too.

If they are asking for all this stuff, they will usually have a salary range set by HR already. As Nervous Nell said, I can't imagine someone making $40 looking for $100. They may use your salary to bring you in at a lower end of the spectrum but again, that's the whole point of a salary negotiation.

As a business they want to hire the most qualified candidate at a reasonable salary range.

I wouldn't make a big deal out of it unless you are asking for 30/40% more than you are making now. I've seen people come in at 25% salary increase bc the company knew they were getting them in at a low but FAIR range.

If they lowball you too much, you know you don't want to work there.

Agreed. If you know the things they are testing, why would you be upset by it?

We always give written and computer tests. There is so much interview fraud out there these days you have to.

It's just a way to lowball their employees. You have to ask for what you want. You can put your old salary down, but IMO it's irrelevant if you are asking for a certain salary to make a move. Good luck!

yes, it is a way to low ball employees. My current employer never asked my past income, bc they knew what they were going to pay.
