Jewelry cleaning?

I have a piece of jewelry that needs to be professionally cleaned. Can I just walk into any jewelry store and ask them to do it? How much does it usually cost? (I've only ever had pieces cleaned where I bought them and it's complimentary. I can't get to the store where this piece is from)

I've had my engagement ring cleaned lots of times from different places and not where the ring was bought.

Also wanted to add, I've never been charged.

I clean my stuff at home.
In a glass bowl add 1 part ammonia to 3 parts boiling water. Add the ammonia to the water, not the other way around otherwise the fumes are stronger.
Let the jewelry soak a bit, use a soft toothbrush to get into crevices and then rinse.

A friend who worked in the business told me about this. Everything shines.
Just not good on pearls or semi precious stones.

I clean at home with windex. I soak my engagement ring in it for about 10 mins, then scrub with a toothbrush under boiling water

Hot water, a tablespoon of straight ammonia and a drop of dish soap.
Let it soak and then scrub with an old soft toothbrush and rinse.

I just use warm water from the tap and a tooth brush. I have an ultra sonic jewelry cleaner and a jewelry cleaning solution, the results are the same with just the warm water and a toothbrush. No need for any chemicals.

Be careful with hot water/steam cleaning if the jewelry has colored stones, they can lose their color. I've had placed like Jared and Zales steam clean my natural aquamarine necklace and it's faded a lot. A professional jewelry store should know better, but apparently they don't.

Thanks everyone! The ring does have topaz and iolite stones, so it sounds like professional/steam cleaning wouldn't be the best for it. After reading all these responses, I did some research and found that mild dish soap and water with a soft toothbrush sounds like the best way to go. Thanks!
