Jacket goes missing from daycare, WWYD?

Update --

Nothing yet :)

I have decided to purchase a new one ONLY because there is just one left on Amazon of his size in the same jacket and since my sister got it for him, I want the same one, and if I wait I risk it not being available anymore.

If it turns up after I purchase the new one I will donate the original :)

We have a coat drive at my work that is going to begin soon so maybe this is all divine! Chat Icon

I feel bad - the other little boy Julian is friends with in class lost his favorite special Batman sippy cup today! Chat Icon

----------------------------------------------------

I should preface this by saying that my son has been going to his daycare center full-time for over a year and a half and they have never lost anything before.

Here's a pic of it from the internet:

I'd give it some more time. Could've gone home with a kid who's father was picking up instead of the mom and he didn't know... maybe divorced parent that didn't know. Just wait another couple of days because I have a feeling it could pop up. May have been put in a book bag by mistake and a parents hasn't looked through it yet or in a car since it's been warm out. The weather has been cool in the AM and I almost forgot DS's jacket a few times at school bc it's warmer in the afternoon. I've left jackets in the book bag over a weekend too.

Yes! Fingers crossed that it is this...

But, after a few days, if it doesn't turn up - what would you do?

As the other poster mentioned, I would give it some time and hope that it turns up.

I personally would not ask the daycare for reimbursement because with children things get misplaced often. Plus, IMO, asking to be reimbursed for a $60+ jacket seems to be a bit much. Typically daycare teachers dont make much, and if it would have to come out of the teachers pocket that is a lot.

Oh Jesus, I didn't think of that! I doubt it would come from the teacher's pocket! The daycare is a large company. So, yeah but either way, after I give it some time and if it does not turn up it'll prob just be easier to go on amazon. Sad, though!

These things happen. I would be upset but not much you can do. Next time maybe send less expensive stuff just in case anything like this happens again.

Re: Jacket goes missing from daycare, WWYD?

DH has brought DS home in a jacket that is not his. It was also a navy blue fall jacket. DS went in a RL blue jacket. DH brings DS home in an Old Navy blue jacket. We got our jacket back.

Someone may have taken it home in error. I would give it some more time, especially if the teacher even sent a message out on it. The family who took it home may not even know that they have it. Once in a while I find something in our drawers that is not ours. I just assume someone left it at our house and our housekeeper laundered it.

I absolutely would not ask the school to reimburse you. My kids lose things all the time.

Wait till elementary school, haha! I'm a teacher and things go missing every day. It has never crossed my mind that the school is at all responsible.

I don't know if the daycare would even reimburse you(I wonder if there is some clause in their "contract" about this _ so I probably wouldn't even bother asking though I would make it clear I wasn't happy that it was missing!

if you really wanted the jacket if it doesn't show up in a few days I would just buy a new one.

but if it was me if he has other jackets he could wear I probably wouldn't waste the money since he will be growing out of it soon anyway OR I would at least get a bigger size to try to see if I can get another year out of it BUT I am cheap like that when it comes to kids clothes at this age and I would hate the thought for me or someone else having to replace a clothes item that they will grow out of probably quickly (if they were a teenager it would be a totally different story)Chat Icon

I'm just going to get a new one and not say anything - especially to my sister who gave it to him! She will feel bad! So I'll wait until the end of the week and then do that.

It's funny, I really didn't think about the idea that they would cover the cost until two moms I'm friendly with from daycare said, won't they reimburse you? And I thought, is this the norm?? Hmm. Anyway, after over a year and a half only one thing missing I think that's not so bad!

I agree.

I save the "good" clothes for home.

It may turn up. You never know. I work in a school and it happens all the time. Even the best teachers, etc lose stuff. It happens. I would never think to ask for reimbursement. If it was me I'd be hesitant to send my DS in something so nice again.

Sometimes we have accidentally received other kids stuff instead or addition to ours and we always send it back in.

I have found other kids stuff months later. I'm sure whoever has it doesn't even realize it unless they are super grimy.

I would wait it out, it might turn up. My DS lost his jacket the first week of K and it showed up a month later. Another little girl had it & didn't realize it.

Also I always sent my DS to daycare with his "daycare" clothes. He always looked cute but I didn't want to worry about his good clothes getting ruined or lost.

Last winter, someone went home with my son's winter coat. A grandparent had picked up and didn't realize - once they did, they returned it.

Unfortunately it was a cold day.

I would give it a few days - it still may turn up. Especially since it went missing over the weekend - someone may have forgotten to mention at drop off they had it or forgot to return it on Monday.

That's too bad it went missing. It's a beautiful jacket. Unfortunately though, when you send a child into a program with clothing, you kind of run the risk of knowing something might get lost. It might be best just to replace it yourself. Maybe it will still turn up. I know when my DD returns home with someone elses' stuff I always wash it and return it. I do all my laundry on the weekends so if DD comes home with a sweater that's not hers on a Monday it's a full week until it's returned. I usually try to communicate to someone that we have something that doesn't belong to us like a sweater or one time shoes Chat Icon but if it's socks or a hat or something I just wash and return.

That's what Ex-DH said! He's miffed!

I was like, you know what? What can you do??

He's like, do you think someone would keep that?! And then have their child wear it?! He's like, I can't believe this! But I told him, give it time! And if that's the case, I don't know what to say. I mean, if someone is willing to do that, that's pretty sad.

Re: Jacket goes missing from daycare, WWYD?

Unfortunately it happens -
It was probably someone other than the kid's 'normal' pick up person who put the wrong jacket on him -

I learned my lesson the hard way and don't spend a fortune on stuff like that anymore -
it's annoying, but true.

9 timse out of 10 it makes it's way back to your kid's cubbie - but it could be 3 weeks from now Chat Icon

I never asked the Daycare for reimbursement, but I DID express my aggravation more than once. I can understand a shirt or socks being misplaced when they are in the infant room and changing clothes constantly - but as they get older .........No, and especially not a jacket!
