IVF w. PGS or PGD

I was just wondering if anyone else did IVF with the genetic screening? We are contemplating our options...our RE wants us either to try this or IUI with washed sperm. (We have had 4 losses..all natural conception, the last one having an extra set of chromosomes) My dr wants to be as aggresive as possible to decrease the chance of another loss which i too would do anything to prevent again...just wanted your thoughts..thanks

I am starting the PGD Testing, right now our test are being made and I just cannot wait to start!

If you have any question feel free to FM b/c there aren't that many of us...

I also know someone else personally who went through PGD...

Good Luck, what ever your choice.

we are very fortnuate that our insurance covers 3 cycles and we don't have to do a certain # of iui first.....

feel like i am jumping quickly into a whole new world but like i said after 4 losses, a major surgery to repair damage post D&C the last thing we want is to lose another baby so I think we are going to go for the gusto.

thanks for your input!

First off I am sorry for your losses. Have you gone through testing for repeat pregnancy loss? Have you and DH had genetic testing done? If those things provide no answers for your losses, then I say go for IVF with PGD. I don't think insurance companies cover PGD and it's a few thousand dollars. Best of luck with your decision.

Like you, we are also very fortunate to have Insurance cover MOSTLY EVERYTHING... HOnestly we only have to pay a couple of thousand out of pocket... which most likely will get reimbursed.

I was honestly contemplating this for years knowing that I was most likely going to do it... I went and saw Linda Sung at a Seminar that she was giving and just knew she was a great Dr. to work with.

We did try naturally, and then one day a switch just went off in my head saying... what are you going to do 3 months down the line if something happens... I years I thought I might be able to handle it... but at that time when I had slight doubt, and I found out that my insurance covered everything, it was kind of a no brainer for me. Everyone is different... but I knew that it was the right time for us.

Re: IVF w. PGS or PGD

I did PGD with my first two rounds of IVF. It is not covered by insurance and I think it ended up costing about $3,500. $2k for the lab and $1,500 for the RE's office to prepare. At my RE's office they had to do ICSI as well to make sure the timing was good and then do a 5 day transfer.

The problem with PGD is that you are actually having the embryo biopsied - which of course is good for testing but bad for the embryo. My RE's office believed that this biopsing reduced the feasability for the embryo to implant and be viable.

Good Luck!

Thank you for your input...yes we have had EVERY test done....genetic testing, chromomsome testing all came back normal. I also have some immune and blood clotting issues that we would be treating at the same time.

She is partially right about this. SOME insurance companies do NOT cover it straight out, but others (thankfully mine) we can submit and they will cover a portion of it, both mine and my husbands so we are lucky enough to hopefully get it reimbursed.

Do you possibly have NJ coverage? that is much better with IVF.

I know this is one of my fears...but the whole point of us doing ivf is for the testing....

Re: IVF w. PGS or PGD

it's strange, my RE, Dr. K, at LIIVF told us there is no evidence that the embryo biopsy does any harm to the embryo or decreases the chance for implantation, there are exceptions of course, but they are just as much for rregular IVF where an embryo can stop developing normally after a few days...

in any case, we did IVF for PGD after three unexplained losses, and it helped us figure out the reason why i was miscarrying, my eggs are screwed up

so yes, with IVF and PGD you get a lot of answers and i personally think it saved me from having another miscarraige (our RE said our embryos looked excellent and if we hadn't done PGD we'd have transfered two, frozen five, and then miscarried, then we would have transfered the frozen embies and miscarried again)

and i know the last thing any woman wants is to miscarry, it's a horrible depressing thing

Re: IVF w. PGS or PGD

I am doing IVF w/ PGD mainly because I am 41 and I have a balanced translocation which means 2 of my chromosomes broke and switched places. My insurance is covering it since I have this condition.
