I've heard it all now....
"Watch out for unusual cravings for items such as dirt, laundry starch, or ice chips. The name for these types of cravings is pica which is caused by an iron-deficiency."

you never heard of this?
A friend of mine from work had it bad with sand. And I had one of those ZEN gardens on my desk with rocks and I used to have to let her stick her finger in it and get some sand to eat. IT was weird.

yeah... it happens although it's rare... i've had patients who were severely anemic eating paper and clay...

I guess I just thought it was the urge to chew on hard things like ice but not dirt and laundry starch

I had the ice thing when I was anemic (not a pregnancy related anemia). I used to have hypersensitivity in my teeth and gums, so I would not have normally been willing to tolerate eating solid ice b/c that makes it so bad!! I didn't crave anything else but I have read about it.

Yes - thats exactly what this is! I have heard of it too - and have worked with kids who have it (kids with autism will sometimes have pica...)
