Re: IUI SUCCESSES??!!

I get IUI the day after I trigger, which essentially is the same thing as a surge. I got pregnant my first one, which ended in miscarriage, but still, it was successful.

Some people do back-to-back IUI's, you might want to try that.

thank you for your response. I am sorry u miscarried, hope u get preg quickly again!!! yes i wanna try back to backs but i wanna do it the DAY i surge and then the day after.... but..... they only allow u to come in the day AFTER u SURGE..... so i wanted some proof that I will not be wasting my time going the day i surge. btw - i have to anticipate the day I surge (its usually the same every month) and lie the day before telling them i surged. this is too much.

Thank you, I hope so too!

Thats crazy you have anticipate the day of your surge - they aren't testing your LH, or are you using OPKs?
If you are guessing on your surge day, that could be the reason it hasn't worked yet, you could be getting the wrong day!

I don't understand why they would refuse to do back-to-back IUI's? Is this an office policy? Or does it have something to do with your insurance coverage?

If that's the route you want to go, it would be the responsibility of the RE to track you with bloodwork and u/s to pinpoint the exact surge. Alternatively, you might just want to invest in the clearblue easy fertility monitor - it uses first morning urine, so that way, the morning you get your little egg symbol, you call your RE and head right in for your first IUI, the day of your surge.

its not that they refuse to do back to back IUI's they just do not allow u to come in the day u surge.... u call the day u surge regardless of the time of day it is and the IUI appmt is made the following day. thats that! i just spoke to drs secretary and she said that is the policy. i just got the cbe fertility monitor (hand my down) and will wait until next cycle to begin. but regardless of FMU surge I would still have to come in next day. i am just gonna anticipate my day 13 surge (as usual) and call day 12 for appmt....... and if not, on to clomid~
how r u? I saw ur post about not getting IUI this cycle..... its ok! just keep babydancing~ u never know. GL~~

Wait, so, with your office, if you WANT to have back-to-back IUI's, they only do it the day after you surge, and the day after that? That's ridiculous! I would consider switching RE's, because you'll be wasting a LOT of money out of pocket if you try to anticipate the day you're going to surge - I always, without fail, surge on CD14, 15 or 16, like clockwork but it's impossible to tell exactly which day it will be, and if you are off by even a day, there goes $300 down the drain!

My doc usually gives me the option of back to back on day of surge and day after or just one the day after the surge.

I was never left to surge on my own and always triggered, so not sure if my answer will help you- My RE doesnt perform back-2-back IUI's (claims it doesnt increase your odds- although I dont really understand why not) and I am a success story (DS Clomid/IUI) on my 3rd attempt....Trying for #2 we were unsuccessful after 7 IUI's and have since moved to IVF ...Good Luck !

I had two successful iuis w/ clomid. The first ended in miscarriage and the second with a baby. I was monitored in the office via sono and given a trigger. I only had two iuis, so it was two for two.

Re: IUI SUCCESSES??!!

I think the reason they do it the day after the surge is b/c the surge indicates that ovulation is GOING to take place in 12-36 hours. The surge doesn't mean that O is happening right then.

I had a IUI which was successful on the first try in Oct. which ended in m/c. The IUI was the day after my surge. We are now trying again.

Re: IUI SUCCESSES??!!

I took the the trigger shot on a Tuesday morning at 9am. By 4:00 that afternoon I was getting a positive on my OPK. I went in on Wed. morning at 9:30 for the IUI. Got my BFP 10 days later and I am currently 15 1/2 weeks along.

The RE told us to BD on Monday when we saw the egg which we did with Pre-Seed. Then they said to abstain until the IUI which we did. The night of the IUI we BD again with Pre-Seed and the day after the IUI we BD 2 more times with Pre-Seed so I don't know what worked to get us preggers but at least we covered all our bases. ok i understand that but what if I get a
surge 12 pm and i get the IUI 3 pm the next day, its over 12 hours, couldnt i have already ovulated and egg already dead 15 hours later?

I had my IUI 24 hrs. after the trigger. Like I said, I also saw a very positive reading on my OPK within 6 hrs. of the trigger and I did get a positive read again the next morning before the IUI. I'm sure the timing will be fine. If you're concerned about the timing I would start BD in conjunction with everything else. This way you hopefully won't miss the egg.

I really don't understand this either since its basically common knowledge that most women get pregnant from s e x before they O. Waiting until the day of O is a BIG gamble. I would be looking for a new Dr

Re: IUI SUCCESSES??!!

Honestly. This last cycle that got me PG, had me surging very late at night- I was POASing 2 times a day as per my RE's instructions. When I had gone in the next day for the IUI, my follicle had not released yet. The IUI was done and again another was done the following day after the follicle was gone.

I had a total of 4 IUIs that cycle. 3 were back to back. One was done prematurely. Every IUI cycle that resulted in a pregnancy for me had at least 2-4 back to back IUIs. All were natural and unmedicated.

I wish I could tell you which one of those IUIs was the one that did it. Though I honestly think it was IUI #2 or 3 and not 4 since it was done after the follicle released.

Your surge doesn't happen at a specific moment and then it is done. It is an increase in LH which triggers the release of the egg, but the actual surge is going on for several hours. This is evident because some women use the CBEFM with FMU and get a + while others use a regular OPK in the afternoon and get the same +. I know I've used both the CBEFM in the morning and the OPK in the afternoon and had a + on both the same day. And once the egg is released there is still about another 12 hours or more for conception to happen. I think your doctor's practices are pretty common from what I've heard.

From what I understand all RE's do the IUI the following day after the trigger. Realize too, it's not a huge gamble because the sperm don't have to travel like they do when you just BD........the best little guys are being placed EXACTLY where they need to be to hit that egg as soon as it drops so it's pretty timed. Like I've said (and I know I was very lucky and fortunate) but I had one IUI (no Clomid or anything) and it worked! I did also BD 2 days prior and the day of and after the IUI so who knows what did it but something worked.

No, not exactly. Once you get your surge, typically it means, for most women, that you will ovulate 12-36 hours LATER. The reason, however, that many RE's like to do back-to-back IUI's, starting on the surge day (which, essentially, is 12-36 hours BEFORE the egg actually drops) is because they like ot have a nice little deposit of spermie waiting in the uterus just as the egg drops. In fact, this is exaclty how I got pregnant with DD - I thought we were out of the running because my DH was out of town the day I got my surge. We BD'd a day or two before and apparently there were enough little men waiting around to fertilize the egg once it dropped.

Now, if your insurance doesn't cover IUI's, most RE's recommend only doing ONE IUI and try to target that IUI for the exact day the egg is dropping which is the day following your surge. What I don't understand though, is if you opt for back-to-back IUI's, why they would refuse to do the first one on the surge day.

Point blank my RE told me they do not do IUI's until the day after surge. PERIOD! and its the drs policy.... (but I do know other drs in the firm do IUI's the day u surge.) so anyway, my track record is I surge on the SAME cycle day evey month, so I am just gonna call the day b4 I normally surge and say I surged and need appmt for next day. so what if I lie, its not gonna do any harm..... so they spermies will be there waiting, hey cant hurt and then i will go in the next day (which will be the day after I surge) see my insurance does pay!!!! so all i have to pay is co-pay! so why not go nuts and do this full force?~ this will be my 3rd IUI and figure give it my all before starting clomid........... (not a big fan of meds)
