It is a great teachable moment
No matter what side you are on, this a great time to teach your kids.........
how to lose gracefully OR how to win gracefully
be accepting of AND respect others opinions
love everyone
always be optimistic
it is ok to be different
america is great
any others?
i had a very nice conversation with my kids today about winning and losing. and how everyone has their own opinions and it is ok to be different. It was a nice conversation.

How can we teach our kids that it's ok to be different when their future president has spoken against anyone who wasn't a Christian white male?
How can we teach our kids that America is great when that same person convinced half the country it wasn't?

Agree. We also talked about how you need to respect the Presidency no matter who wins and that we all need to work together to make things better for the future.

Ohhh ok and this morning America is great when just yesterday it needed to be GREAT AGAIN.... as in it was only great in the past tense.

Half this nation really has lost its mind to have elected this racist in, backed and with the help of the KKK.... let THAT be a teachable moment to your own children. Make sure you raise them to be proud and forthcoming about the bigotry you will likely impart or have already imparted on them.

I think Trump is going to surprise everyone in a good way. I truly do. I wasn't happy when Obama was elected either time but I accepted without calling names. I was worried about Hillary being elected but would have accepted without calling names.You can't always get what you want, and it's our turn now and we chose change. Now let's see what happens.

It is a great teachable moment
This is a really interesting topic to me. I have a high schooler who is an extreme feminist, has many close gay friends, and we live in a very diverse community. Some of her friends were discussing NOT standing for the pledge at school because they cannot support a racist, sexist, bigot president.
I was torn on where to go with her. Part of me wanted to tell her to accept the vote graciously and with maturity, that the right to vote is part of her freedom and she should respect its outcome. The other part of me wanted to tell her to go ahead, that the reason this country has evolved and we have these rights is because of people like her who speak up against indifference. People like Rosa Parks, and Susan B Anthony got women to the point they are now.
It was a very sticky place to be. Curious to hear how others would guide their teen. Smaller children are less aware, but older kids are extremely opinionated and more informed on the issues than more adults I know.

I'm so glad my kids are young enough that I can try to keep them it of this for now. It's tough. Only thing I would say is it's okay to say you're not sure ands give her both sides of your opinion. It's clearer than ever now that just bc we're grown ups we don't have all the answers.
Eight years ago the very diverse high school I worked at stopped classes so the students could watch Obama's inauguration. It was so inspiring. I can't believe this is where we've ended up.

Normally yes it would be good to use this as a teachable moment but I cannot do that today. My 10 year old is devastated - from what she has seen on the TV, newspapers, talking to her friends etc she knows Trump as a bully, a sexist and just recently she asked and I told her that he has never held any type of public office.
I ddi tell her that I have voted for a president in other elections and the other person won and I accepted it - it was what it was but I have never burst out crying upon hearing who our next president would be - a gut reaction to something that I feel deep down is so bad for our country.

It's extremely offensive to compare Obama being elected to trump being elected when Obama didn't spend his campaign vilifying and alienating entire groups of people.

Ironic.. as we stopped at work for his inauguration and I kept working.. I was singled out and harassed.. GET up, go to the conference room this is historic.. you MUST participate. No I do not. I did not vote for him, I do not support him, I do not have to participate. I am PAID to work here and you have absolutely NO right to force your political beliefs on me. As an American I am given a freedom to believe as I choose and without harassment at work. That is my legal right. My boss had to back off.
Today we have a boohoo yahoo breakfast were we have bagels and donuts for the winners and losers in our office. Supporters of both sides are supporting each other. Either way, we still are coworkers, we still have bills to pay and work to do. Kids to feed and lives to live. That's America. 4 years is another chance to see what we can do.
This is America. The pledge isn't to the president or congress. Its to our country and our ideals as a whole country. I would have stood if it had been Hilary or Trump or the dead gorilla. Because my country is the one my father fought for, the one my sister is fighting for and the one I believe in.
The president isn't my country. My country is made up of many small things. Fighting about politics is actually even one small part. But it is a sum of its smaller parts not just one idiotic election with horrible choices. I am proud of my country and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else regardless of who is sitting in the white house.

You should know better than trying with the women on this board! They will still insist that Hillary is Christ incarnate, even though obviously the rest of the country didn't feel that way. He won both the electoral and popular vote. At this point I am willing to be that over half of the LIFers were Trump supporters...but they were keeping it close to the vest. Lose with some dignity.

As of 3 am she had not, though it was very close. But I just woke up and I haven't checked, It didn't occur to me it changed, and really, it doesn't matter. Gore won the popular vote too, Bush was still our president for 8 years.
