Is this true - a baby is more effective than a pump?
I know they say a baby can pull down more milk than a pump but I just don't understand that. Even my LC said they can get up to 1oz more. I realize they do suck harder and faster than a pump but I am still baffled by it. Especially bc when I pump I will let it run for a long time…at least 5-10 min after my last squirt. And when I feel my boob after a pump session it feels completely empty as if I just breastfed.

I absolutely felt that it was true for me when I nursed my kids. I used the Medella PISA but my kids were much more effective.

For me, no, my babies were not as effective. When I nursed exclusively, I constantly had clogged ducts and in turn mastitis a few times. But when I switched to pumping exclusive, and bottle feeding, no issues. They had no issues with latching or anything...

I always felt that DS drained me better than a pump......even though the pump left my boobs feeling empty and deflated. I think that's because the suction of the pump covers more of the breast than DS when he latched on. They felt saggy and lifeless after a pumping session.....much more so than after a feeding session.

Ok now it makes sense a little. When a baby sucks they are pulling milk from more ducts than a pump can reach.
I tend to get clogged ducts if I pump a lot or miss a nursing session. Ok this is making a little more sense now.

I think if a baby has a good latch and nurses effectively, then the baby is better than a pump. For me, my DD never wanted to latch, she fought tooth and nail and 2 days old and finally latched with a nipple shield. She barely drained me, so I always had to pump afterwards.
And you are right about the boobies feeling lifeless after pumping.. I EPed and after each session, the girls used to like gym socks.. I wondered is it because I pumped and didn't nurse..

YES! 100% true from my personal experience.
When I had DS and he finally latched on (3 days after he was born), I nursed mainly but I wanted DH to get some time to feed him too. I had the Avent pump and I would get maybe 1-3 oz total and be pumping for an hour. I tried for a good 3 weeks.
Long story, short... a doctor told me about the baby being more effective and DS was breast fed successfully for 13 months. I don't think he would have gained any weight if I had pumped only.

I'm sure there are exceptions, however biologically that is what your breasts were made for--so a babies mouth provides the perfect suction to express milk. Pumps are made with the effort to mimic that suction, but it isn't perfect.
However if your baby has a bad/ineffective latch or a weak suck, the pump may be more effective until those issues are resolved.

For me it was. DS did not latch so I thought I could pump and feed but my supply never got to where it should be and I dried up after 4 weeks completly.

I am only able to pump ~40 oz per day. That's not enough to feed my twins. However, if I exclusively nurse them, they are completely satisfied.

My DS is definitely is gets more out then the pump does. After he nurses I can barely express anything from that breast but the pump never empties the breast fully for me. However, I do pump both sides and DS sometimes only feeds off of one so it probably evens out if you add the two sides together.

Yes!! I could not get a let down with pumping unless I was nursing at the same time. I was lucky if I got an oz if I pumped with out the baby. I nursed DD for 2 yrs and DS for 1. GL!!

What I don't understand is that if the pump is more effective, why does it take the baby so long to eat? I fed DD this morning and then pumped both sides for literally 3 minutes and got 5 ounces, so what takes her so long?!

I once read that 80-90% of your milk lets down within the first 5 minutes. However my DD loves to stay on and suckle. She will stay on 10+ min on each side and she is 8 mos - I usually have to remove her. This is a big improvement because she used to stay on 20-30 min per side! I think it is just comforting for them.

Same!
My body knew if it was the pump or DS. It reacted better - aka - produced more milk.
Once I went back to work my supply dropped as he wasn't nursing as much & I needed to depend on the pump for a majority of the feedings.
