Is this excessive? Would you talk to the deacon? Sorry..long

DD is in 1st grade and 2 weeks ago (there was no religion last week) she came home with a ditto that she told me needed to be colored to spell the word "love". There was also a short story at the top that we read together. This week in religion the teacher asked who knew the story and those that could tell it back to her to raise their hand. 3 children did, all other students were told that they had to do their hw( which DD did, her page was colored) and if they didn't they would be sent to Deacons xx's office, no excuses. Than the children had to write 20 times "I have to do my homework".
My problem is that if the children needed to be able to tell the story back in their own words shouldn't that have been more clear ( like maybe a note to parents since she is in 1st grade). If only 3 kids could do it and the 15 other kids couldn't wouldn't that have been a clue to the teacher that she wasn't clear??

Would you call the deacon or just drop it?

I'm not sure if I would call the deacon off the bat but I would definitely talk to the teacher and see what her response is like. She really should have noted that the children will need to be able to tell the story back to her at the next class, especially if she wants to be so harsh if they're not able to.

My mother is a Catholic school teacher and I will tell you, at least at my mom's church, they have no real education in teaching. They are not teachers (unless a volunteer just so happens to be an actual teacher) only people from the parish who volunteer to do this service. I don't remember what type of training she had to do but she certainly doesn't have a teaching degree. My mom focuses on trying to make it as fun as possible and would never be "punishing" the kids like that.

I would definitely have a problem with the "punishment" dealt out. I don't think the children should be punished for not completing homework. The class and the teachings are suppose to be funny and create some warmth for the child within the church.

I would talk to the teacher and go from there. I would also encourage my child to explain to the teacher they didn't understand the home work. I understand authority, but being mean or walked over because they are an authority is not ok either.
