Is this a good idea or a really bad one?

DH and I don't agree.

DS' 3rd bday party is tomorrow outside in our backyard. It's a truck/construction theme.

One idea to keep the kids busy is to put up a very large piece of paper (it's a roll of bulletin board sized paper) and to put out washable temptura paint with foam brushes so the kids can paint. Blue, yellow, red.

DH says no way. And that parents will get upset with their kids getting all dirty and full of paint. I thought it was a great idea but see his side of it.

What do you guys think?

IMO, if I were bringing DD to a birthday party she would be in nice clothes and I would not want those clothes to get paint all over them.

No, definitely not a good idea for 3 year olds... unles you notify parents ahead of time so they can wear old clothes.

I have the crayola washable tempra paint and it is not really washable so i would say no to the paint. Can
You put cardboard down under the paper and do crayons instead? What about chalk, a bubble machine, playground balls (stop & shop had has them for 50 cents).

Unless I was told a head of time (either on the invite, or called/emailed) I would have DS in nice clothes and wouldn't want them to get dirty even if it is washable.

Unless I knew it was at a gymnastic place or bounce. Then they look good, but I know they'll be a mess so not dress them so much. Should've had something in the invite.
Other thing I have seen is when the host provides smocks or shirts to keep the kids clean. For a friend's party they did make your own donuts and made the kids personalized aprons they wore then got to bring home.

ITA. If you do it, have a bunch of smocks on hand.

I like the idea, but what about crayons instead. The kids are entertained and not dirty. If you do paint I would go to goodwill or somewhere and buy some old button down shirts or tees to put over their clothes.

Very cute idea. I'd either have smocks ready or just skip the paint and do washable markers and crayons.

maybe if you want to give them tshirts as smocks that would work.

Kids get dirty - I'd get some washable paints and have at it. If someone wants to borrow one of DS's shirts so be it.

Re: Is this a good idea or a really bad one?

I think the kids would have so much fun but I guess DH "wins" this one.

We have a bubble machine, swing set, sandbox, bought 6 new dump/construction trucks for the party, and we will have 2 girls doing face painting plus balls in the backyard and chalk.

I like the crayon idea so maybe I'll do that. I did buy a bunch of crayons.

Not a good idea unless you specifically say it is a painting party on the invite. Plus, you know that paint will get tracked into your house!

IMO- its a party for a three year old. Why would you dress your kids in nice clothes? Loosen up and let them have fun!

I am with your DH on this one.........100%!!!

I usually dress my DD in something cute when we have a party to attend and I would be so annoyed to find paint when I arrived because I KNOW that would be a messy disaster. Chat Icon I prefer painting at home when she is in clothes I don't care about and a smock.

Why not do the paper thing but have crayons and maybe a ton of stickers out too instead? Still fun but waaaaaay neater. Chat Icon

Sounds like you have enough to keep the kids busy without it.

I agree with this 1000%. But I also know that not every parent feels that way. I would love to do this at a party for my kid, but I am certain there would be parents attending with their kids who would be upset about it.

ITA! I would only be okay with it if warned ahead to dress for getting messy otherwise DD usually likes to dress up for parties.

Re: Is this a good idea or a really bad one?

Didn't do it, the party was yesterday. But, the party was outside and the kids had a blast playing on and with all our outside toys and swing set.

The kids did not want to leave and as I looked at them, they were all really dirty from playing and having so much fun. Chat Icon
