Is there such a thing as too many vacations?

This is an on-going debate in our house. I like to go away as often as humanly possible. DH thinks it's too much. I grew up going on 2 or so week long vacations a year and a few weekenders. DH went to Wildwood once a year for a few days.
Because my parents bought a bunch of timeshares when I was a kid, I can travel very cheaply. And because I'm a dance teacher, I have all the school breaks and summer off with my kids. I'm also off on Fridays, which makes weekenders very doable.
Despite the money, or the fact that I don't spend much, DH thinks it's ridiculous to go away so much. I even take the kids away without him a few times a year because he doesn't want to take off.
Do you think there's such a thing as too many vacations? I clearly don't, but maybe I'm the minority. Chat Icon I love going away and making memories with my kids. I just don't see the harm. Maybe someone can point out something I'm just not seeing.

Heck No! If you have the time and money then go for it!
Making memories and spending time together is important and that's what vacation is about. It's sad we live in a world where we feel guilty when we use our vacation days.

As long as you can afford it and have the time why not?

To me, vacations are such a hassle due to packing, planning etc. but that is just me being silly and lazy.

Honestly, sitting home can get boring and depressing. Why not mix it up?

Hell no!

Like others have said, as long as money isn't an issue, GO!

There's a whole world out there that needs to be explored.

Absolutely not! As long as you have the time and money, take as many vacations as you want! I need at least a few every year just to decompress and relax or I would lose my mind!

To a point yes. Too many weekend trips is tough. I work M-F in the city and if I was constantly away on weekends and then had to work all week and fit in things I would normally do on the weekends it would get old quick.

I would much rather go on two week long vacations and then spend my summer weekends at the beach. We are surrounded by water and things we take for granted as a 10 min drive to the ocean is a weekend trip for others......I think we are lucky by living in the area we do so no need for weekend trips all the time.

I seriously wish i had your problems! Chat Icon

I say no. As long as you and the kids are happy and your DH isnt alone for long periods of time without you and he is happy then why not? If you have time and money why not? If the kids want to be home more when the are older and feel like they are missing their friends than thats something to consider later on.

No way!

Do what you love. If you can afford it and have the time why not!? Might as well take advantage while your kids are young and don't have many commitments!

Re: Is there such a thing as too many vacations?

Funny because I was just having a conversation with my husband about this. I like to do a big 1 week vacation about every 6 months.
My DH thinks going away 2x a year is lavish. I was telling him I would show him all the trips LIfamilies members take in a year! lol

I am a big fan of vacations and say go for it!

Well, your kids will certainly appreciate the experiences.

I know I have such fond memories of the places my parents took me. It really meant a lot to me to see those places.

Some of my favorite trips were with them.

If you have the time and money for it without having to sacrifice retirement funding or kids college funding then go for it. To me if one or both of the other two items have to be sacrificed or you were in debt for other things, then no. But if you have healthy finances, go for it.

Re: Is there such a thing as too many vacations?

I love to travel. My travel lifestyle took a huge hit after we had children.

DH thinks I have a travel disease because I am always thinking about travel. DH wants to do 1 longish week vacation and a handful of weekend trips per year. He does not want to go away every month.

I want to do about 3 longer vacations and a weekend trip every month.

That sounds just like me! If I don't go away at least once a month, even if it's just for a night, I feel like something is missing. The most I tend to go without some sort of trip is two months.

Maybe, since he didn't travel much he feels that it is extravagant--even if it isn't financially & that in a way it is "spoiling" the kids?

OR that vacations are less special if they are too common?

DH would travel more than I would if money & time form work were no object, but I feel we need to spend more time & money on hour home. To me, vacationing is sort of running away from life & you shouldn't run away too often. Chat Icon

That sounds pretty on point with the way he thinks. And in theory, I kind of get it.
I just justify it in the opposite direction. Lol

Is there such a thing as too many vacations?

For me personally, yes.
It breaks up the routine of our lives and that is the problem. To be taking as many vacations as you described our family would be in turmoil. We went away last June for 4 days and it took my son a month to get back on track.
But everyone is different.

Not for me. I love to travel, and I love the feeling of just getting away from the normal routine. It drives dh crazy because I am always talking about the next place I want to go. I have the next several years of vacation all planned out in my head, lol. He enjoys being away, but is probably just as happy staying home. He is not one to plan a vacation. Since we have been married it has been me who has planned every single trip we have taken. I also sometimes take trips with just the kids, like great wolf, hershey, universal orlando, though not as often now that I have 4 dc. Growing up we took a lot of vacations, sometimes with both parents and sometimes with just my mom. I have great memories of experiencing different countries for the first time and can't wait to do the same with my kids. I will say that, like one of the previous posters we rarely go away in the summer because it is such a great time of year here at home. But I think that if you can afford it and have the time then go for it.

Re: Is there such a thing as too many vacations?

I think there can be.

For the last 5 years we were going away in Nov. and then sometimes an additional trip that year. I noticed my kids started to sound bratty when we would come back and ask when we were going away again.
The last trip we took was April 2014 and that was a few days in disney and Ft. Lauderdale. That will probably be the last trip for a few years only because we have a lot coming up the next few years.

I love taking them places and making memories with, especially since I did not grow up like that. I just want the vacations to be special not expected.
