Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
It's really worth it. There is cell service and, in my book, there is no such thing as boredom on vacation. With a pool, alcohol, and unlimited food- there is no reason to be bored.
As far as trapped? I've never been on a cruise where there's been an emergency and I've been on several. But DH's aunt has- she's been on a cruise in a storm so bad that it sucked the hot tubs off deck. She's been on a cruise that ran into the dock leaving a huge gaping hole in the ship. This has NEVER deterred her. In each instance she's gotten a free cruise and the option to stay on the ship and eat and drink for free for the remainder of the trip. And each time she has opted to.
ETA: Also, as far as motion sickness. You really DON'T feel the boat move and they sell over the counter seasickness meds at the shops on the boat. I once went with someone who is prone to motion sickness and he was fine with the over the counter meds.

I put cruises in the same category as having children-lol. It might be a horrible experience (labor and delivery) but you usually go back and do it again-lol.

Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
I've been on 3 cruises - all with Royal Caribbean. Two were week-long on larger ships while one was a 4 day on a small ship.
I did not enjoy the small ship but, I really liked the larger ships - there was a lot more to do. Also, when I went on the smaller ship, it was cold so we couldn't go to the pool - which wasn't the case on the larger ship.
My favorite itinerary is the Southern Caribbean - there are some beautiful islands there and the waters seem to be more calm than the Bahamas/Western Caribbean routes. Also - we only had one full day at sea which was wonderful IMO.

Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
I don't like them. I've been on one in February 2007..it left Tampa and went to Grand Cayman and Playa del Carman..well they were having very cold and windy weather in Florida and the boat was ROCKY. I got very sick and ended up having to take Bonine which made me sleep all day.
Besides that, here is why I won't go on another caribbean cruise. If you are leaving from Florida, you have to fly from NYC to Florida and get to Florida a day before the cruise. You don't want to chance missing your cruise in case your flight is delayed so figure you have to get to Florida a day earlier. So you unpack for a night and then the next morning you have to repack and leave for the cruise. Honestly, for all that hassle I would much rather go on an all inclusive vacation in the Caribbean. You still have 1 flight and you have all the things you have on the cruise (unlimited food, entertainment, sun) but you are on land.
People tell me that I should give cruises another chance and I considered it. I told DH I would only go on another cruise if: 1. If was the cruise from NJ to Bermuda. I would do this because there is no flight and because the hotels in Bermuda are very pricey. 2. If it was an Alaskan cruise. I would do this because from what I hear, this is the best way to see Alaska.
I wouldn't do another Caribbean cruise again because I would rather do an all inclusive. I wouldn't do a European cruise because they are just too long.

Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
I don't like cruising because:
1) I often feel nautious on the ship. You DO feel the boat. All the time. 2) I like visiting a new place for more than a few hours. 3) I don't like having to dress up for dinner and being told exactly what time I have to go eat. (Some cruises have freestyle dining now though.) 4) I feel like I am still swaying for up to a week after the cruise.
I have been on 4 cruises with 4 different cruise lines. There are things I like about cruising too but I am personally done with cruising.

I don't like cruises.
I am in a VAST minority and people always try to convince me that my reasons are ridiculous but I can't help the way I feel.
My reasons are ~
1. I suffer from TERRIBLE motion sickness and don't care that every says you don't feel the boat move. It would be a very expensive mistake for me to make.
2. The feelings of being trapped that you mentioned. I don't even care for all inclusive resorts for that reason, but with all inclusives at least you can leave if you want. When a boat is at sea, where do you go??
3. I have children and I am not comfortable brining them into international waters where laws are sketchy at best.
ditto on all counts. i went on a cruise ONCE. i have terrible vertigo and motion sickness. EVERYONE told me "oh you wont feel the boat move, its huge, you dont understand, blah blah blah". so i went on the cruise. Well as soon as the boat left out of the port, i felt it! i spent half the trip sick in my room on dramamie. Never again will i cruise.

Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
Some family members wont cruise for the reasons cited above,,
And that feeling of the ground still swaying when you get back on land is known as "sea legs", and yes it is annoying but it went away after a few days after the cruise...I would still go on another cruise because I loved the dining options/choices, and the ability to see many ports in a short span of time (and of course, the price).

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I can say that if you have motion sickness leaving from FL is not always best as the waters can tend to be rough. While you don't have to come in the day before in fact most people who cruise only fly in the day of - it is a good idea only because you risk losing a day. I think this is why all vacations are so different - to me - I don't mind the extra day to unwind - and use it to lay by the pool and just relax. But that is my personal taste - and again why I said itinerary/ships etc is very important b/c people have different tastes.
I can say I'm not a huge fan of the ports that were on your cruise so I wouldn't be excited about that either. So I can understand why you weren't crazy about the cruise.
I will say that weather related - unfortunately that can happen anytime. The advantage of a cruise versus resort is that hopefully you are moving and therefore the weather would hopefully charge quicker than if you were locked in one location with a weeks worth of showers.
If you get motion sickness you perhaps might not want to consider Bermuda. It was a fabulous cruise but most tend to have a few days at sea. Leaving out of NY the water can be very very rough depending on what is going on (hurricanes etc). Bermuda season is smack during hurricane season so there is a strong possibility that you will hit rough seas.
But for anyone - it isn't just the ship that is important if you get motion sickness. Location, location, location is too. Certain places on the ship feel less movement. So that is important when booking. My mother gets horrible motion sickness and can't take any of the tenders to shore. But she does very well on the cruises b.c she is careful about where they sail from, where on the ship their room is, and if it "might" be rough makes sure to remember to take her meds before they sail and has never had a problem and enjoys their cruise. Also for those who don't want to socialize with strangers - with every line (some more than others) you can be as social or as asocial as you like. I know people who want to go out dancing and getting to meet others and others who prefer to find a quiet lounge chair with their book, and spend it quietly soaking in the sun just with their DH. So it can appeal to a wide range but again it helps to pick the right line and right ship and destinations. I love cruising but have been on trips where honestly if I hadn't cruised before I probably wouldn't go again

Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
I don't have the desire to go.
ITA with the PPs...trapped feeling (I felt this way on Hawaii as well)...not really interested in that type of vacation (I would rather get to know a location intimately and explore)...etc
And the thought of having the kids with me!
DH and I do plan on taking 2 cruises....when the kids are older....Alaska and when they are out of the house...a golf cruise around the Caribbean. I would also consider one from Patagonia to Antarctica.

I barely see my kids on a cruise-lol. My ds who was 7 at the time liked to eat dinner with his friends so he was gone from about 5pm to midnight or later. He asked us not to come early to pick him up-lol. My dd was 12 so she was in the teen center and with friends almost the entire cruise.

Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
We've only been on one RCCL Mediterranean Cruise in 2006. We loved it. It was my DH's first time to Europe and it was a great way for him to experience multiple countries in a short period of time. We were on the Voyager of the Seas and I thought the rooms were pretty spacious (we had a balcony) except for the bathroom.
It was also awesome to visit so many places and unpack once.
We definitely want to try a carribbean cruise or one to Bermuda one of these days.

DH and I did a Med. cruise with Seabourne. It was awesome! We decided to do our first cruise with a luxury liner and it was so worth it! We had freestyle dining, breakfast in our room every morning, and all drinks included. However, DH was sick the first few days. It was very port heavy so it was good that there was a lot to do off the ship. We may do another cruise with them, but it won't be for a while

Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
I'm not a fan. They're quite popular with my family, and my grandfather used to take us on them all the time. I think I've been on about 7, so I've had plenty of experience with them & have been to most caribbean destinations: St Thomas, St Martin, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Cozumel, Aruba, Dominica, Grand Cayman, Curacao, Caracas, Martinique, Granada, Playa del Carmen...still don't like cruises.
I do get bored on the ship. There's entertainment all day long, but not necessarily stuff I'm interested in. I like to explore a destination and soak up the culture, not spend a few hours here and a few hours there. The pools on the ship can't compare to a resort pool or beach.
Cruises are not for me.
eta: whoever said you DON'T feel the boat move hasn't been on a ship in rough seas. I've been on a 1-2 cruises where you had to hold on walking down the halls because the ship was rocking so hard.

I have been on a cruise that went right around a hurricane. Oh, I felt it but it did not ruin the cruise for me and I went right back on another one. Not all cruises are like that though and the other ones I have been on you barely feel anything.

Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
Nope -- do not like cruises and have absolutely no desire to go on one.
I don't care how nice people make it sound, it's not for me.
The idea of being in the middle of nowhere, out in the ocean, FREAKS me out. When we did a cruise when I was a kid, I absolutely hated it. I do not like boats very much and all I could think about was how there was water all around us when we were at sea.
Feel like the rooms, for what you would spend, are so small compared to what I would get for the same amount or less at an all inclusive resort.
When I'm at an AI resort, if I wanna walk around on the beach in the middle of the night or before bed, I can do that. I don't have such an option really on a cruise ship. It just feels cramped to me no matter how big the ship is.

Me + cruise ship = Motion sickness is the worst!!
My family and I took a cruise from ME to Nova Scotia (in August). WORST.CRUISE.EVER. Granted it wasn't a big ship like RC, but it was still huge.
I stayed on the top deck, covered in blankets b/c it was freezing and raining. I was so nauseaus the whole time. The dining room was swaying back and forth. I had to take 2 dramamine which lead me to sleep for 2 days.
I like the idea of cruises and i'm not afraid, I just feel awful being on a boat.

I have never gone on one so i don't have any first-hand experience. I think i would feel claustrophobic and i'm afraid i would be sick the whole time. Plus, i'm always hearing about stomach bugs spreading on the cruise ships. DH feels the same as me, so i'm almost positive we'll never go on one. But i know plenty of people love them. Whatever floats your boat

I have been on 6 cruises, 5 celebrity, one Royal Carib.
I have been on a 3 night, three 7 night, and two 12 night cruises.
I have experienced rough sea's, and still love it. Its the most relaxing experience for me.
I don't think I will ever go on another cruise that is less than 7 nights, its just way to short and i prefer the 12 night cruises because you get into the groove of being on the ship

Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
I've been on a Disney cruise and an Alaskan cruise. They were both family trips. I'm glad DH has no desire to go on a cruise because I will never go on one again. I get seasick and either spend time on the boat miserable or totally out of it because of dramamine. I'm really glad I went to Alaska and I do enjoy the day trips when we dock. I hate being on a boat though. If I didn't get seasick, I wouldn't really have a problem with cruises.

Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
I don't like them. Not because of fear. I just prefer to be in a town (Caribbean or not) and have the ability to walk it, find a coffee place to return to the next day, get a true feel for the local culture, etc. On a cruise you are out at a location for a few hours and then poof..... off to the next place.
As for the ships.... they are fine. A bit gaudy for my taste. I hate the salt water pools and all of the people that are around you when you are at sea.

Re: is there anyone here who DOESN'T like cruises?
I see the point of enjoying one island. Many times I think that maybe someday I will want to just spend an entire vacation at the one island but then think what would I do all day-lol. We have made friends on the cruises we have gone on and now with facebook, we are able to speak to them on a daily basis. My dh is VERY social and we get involved in EVERY thing on a cruise-lol. We always meet the cruise director and develop a relationship with them and my dh wins contests on the cruise so everyone knows him throughout the ship so it is fun as we are always doing something and meeting people.
