Is there a website...

That can determine, through one answering questions, what breed of dog is BEST for them? I have a good friend who wants a dog but is unsure what type of dog is good for her and her lifestyle. I was wondering if there is a "test" where she could answer questions and based on that - the site would tell her a list of breeds that are good for her to look into owning.

Thanks so much! I suggested a schnauzer b/c our Charlotte York is a schnauzer and she is WONDERFUL but I still would like her to take a test, if one exists, to make sure she is getting the right breed for her. TIA! Chat Icon

She needs to go to a shelter..no there is no test.

Breeds not to have if you live in an apartment or not home most of the day/night. Huskys..high strung, need much exercise.

Whenver people are unsure I suggest they go to their local shelter and register as a foster parent...best way to know if your want the 15 year commitment or it is just a passing fancy.

Re: Is there a website...

i don't know exactly where it says anything about her not being home a lot or living in an apartment - she owns her own 2,000 square foot home and works from home (owns her own biz). in any event, she would like to get a dog from a reputable breeder - one that is registered through the AKC - she, growing up, has owned many dogs and is FULLY aware of the life-long responsibility of owning and caring for a pet. her family has rescued many animals (both cats and dogs). this time she would like a pure-bred dog - a specific type - i don't think she should be ridiculed for that by saying, when i simply ask if there is a good way to determine what breed matches ones personality, "she needs to go to a shelter" ...she does not need to be told what to do - she is an adult and can make her own decisions.

Just looked at the site - GREAT!

Thank you so much!!

I think those questions are perfect - her main concern is just getting a dog that is hypo-allergenic and does not shed b/c of her DH's allergies. He gets shots once a week from an allergist but it is still hard for him so that is VERY important to her... I still vote for the miniature schnauzer Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Is there a website...

I think she needs to evaluate what kind of characteristics she desires, and which ones she does not, along with how much training she is willing to undergo for herself & the dog. One thing to remember though is that although AKC dogs have general characteristics, the individual characteristics of any dog can alter from the breed standard. I think the idea of getting a shelter dog is great because many times they are older & trained, and the characteristics of the dog are already apparent, unlike a puppy from a breeder (reputable or not) that can change or turn out to not be within the breed standard. Also, it is incredibly hard to just find a good breeder, and can take years to do so. And finally, reputable breeders do not always have dogs available for adoption(sale), and if they do they may not sell to a pet home.

There is a long process involved in getting a first dog. If you would like a complete list of things to look for in a breeder, along with a questionnaire for any potential breeder, feel free to FM me.

Again, a shelter or adopted dog is good choice for many reasons, and is never a bad suggestion when discussing getting a pet.

ETA: I have a Chinese Crested & it is hypo-allergenic (no fur & no dander), but you have to bathe the dog weekly or her skin gets breakouts. Shih Tzu's do not have fur, but their hair is very high maintenance, and Havanese are great hypo-allergenic dogs as well, and have a great temperament. Shanti has several and works with the rescue, and I am sure she would not mind helping.

Just remember that even if a dog is considered hypo-allergenic, there is a chance that allergies could still be a problem. Regardless of what dog is chosen, I advise that your friend & her SO meet the dog in person to make sure that the allergies are not affected.

Re: Is there a website...

I just did this quiz for fun and the first one that pops up is the breed of my doggie! I just thought that was cute.

I wouldn't only go by this quiz to look for a dog though.
We narrowed down our choices based on our lifestyle and how much time we could spend exercising, training and grooming the dog. And also some breeds are prone to certain medical issues.
We looked and researched for months before we found what was right for us.
We didnt narrow it down to specific breeds, but a few breeds since we were looking to adopt.
Then we searched on petfinder and shelters in our area.
