Is there a double standard?
So this whole Chris Brown thing got me thinking.
Yes, I do believe what he did was horrible, terrible, shocking, and there is NO excuse in the world that could make up for what he did to Rhianna.
And I definitely can understand all of the backlash against him. While I am not sure how I feel about the punishment given to him, I also understand that my opinion cannot change what he got and I can only hope that he has learned from this and NEVER lays another hand on a woman again.
But here's my question. One of the reports I read said that this was not the first physical altercation he and Rhianna had. It also said that in the first altercation they got into, Rhianna was the one who hit Chris Brown first, then he ended up pushing her into a wall.
Do you think there is a double standard when looking at physical violence? I feel as though when a man hits, slaps, punches a woman the reaction is so severe against that man about what an animal he is.
Then when you hear about women who abuse, hit, scratch, slap a man you rarely ever see the same reaction about her. I remember there being a professional baseball player that got his a$$ beat by his wife. I don't remember anyone going on and on about what a monster she was.
Just some food for thought on a lovely Wednesday.

Re: Is there a double standard?
I think there is a double standard due to the strength of a man versus a woman. Generally (but not always) a man is bigger, stronger, and can be more violent. I think that is why men get a harsher penalty. It's to teach them how to control themselves in these situations. I think anyone who abuses mentally, physically, verbally, etc. deserves punishment.

yes yes yes yes yes!!
there absolutely is.
let me give an example.
i used to work with batterers - most of them were mandated to counseling by the Court.
there was one man who had a history of getting into domestic altercations with his girlfriend, provoked by her (she admitted it). she would hit him, punch him, bite him... and he would never call the police, fearing they would not believe him, and because they had a child, he didn't want to have to leave the home.
one night she pulled a knife on him and he attempted to restrain her by holding her wrists, pushing her against the wall, and taking the knife away. she called the police to have HIM arrested.
the judge ordered both of them to participate in the batterers counseling program.
i think a big part of the judge's reasoning was this man was approximately 6'3", 250 lbs, ALL muscle. his girlfriend was 5'3" or so and 100 lbs soaking wet. IMO, the judge assumed that there was no way the girlfriend was the abuser in this relationship.
so yes, i do feel that there is a double standard, and it's not isolated within the media or mainstream society - it's also common even among some people trained to work with batterers.

yes. My friend's brother's (now) ex-wife would punch, hit, beat him - trying to get him to hit her back, so she could get sole custody of the kids. He never hit back.

Re: Is there a double standard?
Only for this instance with Chris Brown and Rhianna that she got the brunt of the fight. He clearly was able to over power her. Most of the time this is the case and yes it is unfair but soooo many women die from the hands of an abuser and are not protected.

I agree. Even if the man is stronger, the woman shouldn't hurt him.
