is my beach grass dead?
We have an ornamental beach grass on the side of our house. It was not receiveing proper watering from the sprinklers. Since then the sprinklers have been adjusted but in the mean time the grass turned from green and brown beach grass to full brown and it curled up. I gave it a few deep waterings last week before the rain. Today I went to touch the grass and much of the grass was easy to pull out from the base. There is very little green left. in the middle, though it appears as there is new growth stemming from the dried grass (though 95% is dry about 5% green in the middle) Willl/can this plant make a comeback? Can it recover and lok good this season? I don't know the exact name of the beach grass but it is pretty uniform in style, color. Help!

Re: is my beach grass dead?
It might have gotten too much water, not too little. I don't water any of my ornamental grass and they do fine. Does it get at least 6 hours of full sunlight? If not, wetness might be the issue.
Also, ornamental grasses tend to need division after about 3 to 5 years. They start dying out, usually in the middle first. All you do is cut the dead spots out - roots and all - and then divide up the good spots into smaller pieces.

Re: is my beach grass dead?
we have similar ones planted around the house and the ones that receive ample waterings through the sprinklers have done fine. This particular grass is planted on the west side of our house which receives less light than the others. There is one of the same grass on the east side of our house that went through the same thing and when I watered it, it bounced back. When the two grasses were not watered, they looked curley and lifeless but when I applied the hose to it, they bounced back to life. As far as my black thumb understands, that to me would indicate they needed water, considereing the sprinklers on the east and west side of our house were broken. The grass on the east side looks great. A landscaper planted these in April so they are small and you would think that he only planted them where they would thrive. Ugh I don't know. I'm upset over this. Thanks for your input. Can I assume that because there is new growth-it will be ok?

Ok, it sounds like you're assuming it's not getting enough water and trust your landscaper, so I guess keep watering it or ask him what to do.
Now that you mention it was planted this year, yes, they need regular watering their first season. But keep in mind, western exposure is the worst exposure for plants that want full sun. Good luck with it.
