Taking care of beach grass
We had landscapers plant beach grass. They are fairly young and were told they would get large for years to come. What do I do in the meantime to guarantee they come back healthy? Thanks!

most varieties are very hardy. You can either cut them down to ground level now, or leave the grass after it turns brown & cut it down in the early spring. They pretty much take care of themself. I have a few that are about 4 feet around & over 4 ft tall, I'm going to divide them in the sring.

Re: Taking care of beach grass
We have a TON of beach grass in our backyard...Last year we didn't - but boy did it grow!!!!! And we didn't do anything (I know you're supposed to cut them back, which we'll do this year.) But besides that, I don't think you need to do anything. We actually are planning on splitting a lot of it, so if anyone has suggestions on how to do that I would really appreciate it!!!!

it is hearty and spreads to be plush
we cut them down to 4 feet now (still green) and will cut them to the ground in December. I have left it over the winter and it's fine when it comes back, but when it gets so big it blocks our walkway.

Re: Taking care of beach grass
We have what's called Variegated Japanese Silver Grass. It's ornamental grass but each leaf is white and green instead of just green.
The first year we planted it, we left the leaves all winter. It looked kind of cool when there was snow on it. We did this for a little extra protection over the winter. In spring, once I started seeing new shoots about a foot high, I cut it down to about a foot to a foot and a half.
I don't mind the way it looks in the winter, so although it doesn't need it, I'm going to leave it alone again.
As for dividing, check the middle of the clump now. If there's a dead spot in the middle, when you divide, cut around that spot and then chuck it. Section off the outside areas any way you like. Depending on the type of grass (I hear Miscanthus is hard) you might need a shovel with teeth on it like this:
