Is it truly worth it?

Today out of curiousity I went to Behrs to check out furniture and of course fell in love with a few different sets. They are all extremely expensive (about 2500 or more). I then went to BRU and did not like their sets but of course they were considerably cheaper. Right now we rent an apt. and we are saving for a house as we do not have money to waste but I really like the Behr sets and I will keep the furniture for years and years so Im thinking of it as an investment of some sort. LOL. I dont know what to do. I know I should be practical but...

Re: Is it truly worth it?

I am going practical. I want to purchase a great adult dresser so that it will always be used. We are going very practical on the crib. I would rather the money spent on other things.

I could see spending on a carseat or stroller, but a crib? it kind of just sits there, and for a limited time.

I do get the fever when browsing around, but for us, it makes more sense.

Re: Is it truly worth it?

IMO it's not worth it. I found a set at BRU that was almost identical to one at Behrs and it was a fraction of the cost.

IMO it's worth it. Get one that can convert to a bed and the baby can use it for awhile and then baby #2 can use it and so on.

Re: Is it truly worth it?

Its totally a matter of opinion and theres no right or wrong...
my opinion. no way Chat Icon

WE all say it converts to a toddler bed, i'll use it for years, etc. Just like you want to change your own decor in the house or anything else, trust me, you will want to get your children different furniture as they grow.
I went practical, bought them blue colored furniture at Ikea, which I love, and if they beat it up (dont forget the toddler years Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon ) I will def get them "big boy" furniture when they are ready.

Also as far as using the toddler bed part of the crib, depending on the yrs apart that you have kids, you usually wind up using the crib again and again, and not using the toddler part because of new baby. and I couldnt wait to get them toddler beds, just for a change of scenery Chat Icon

and if youre saving for a house, i would def not spend so much money on baby furniture, you dont know the layout of the house that you will buy one day, size of the rooms, your tastes will change and you may want something totally different... you "outgrow" the desire to want this stuff after many years...

just my opinion. Chat Icon

Re: Is it truly worth it?

IMO it's totally worth it. I bought DD a lifetime crib, changing dresser/hutch and 5 chest of drawers. They have the same set at BBB. I was tetering back and forth with the same issue, BUT this set does'nt look like baby furniture, gianna can grow with it, AND it's made really well. The drawers are dovetailed, it's made from solid hard wood-so it wont' dent or scratch.

In my opinion, I found the furn at BRU so flimsy and most was made of pine and non solid woods. Her bed will turn into a full size bed too. I don't plan on buying her another set ever, she can take this set to her college apartment!

here are some pics.

This is the changing dresser, hutch wasn't delivered yet.

Re: Is it truly worth it?

IMO, no, considering your situation (and mine!). I feel that our set looks just as lovely as sets I found in furniture stores and it was half the cost. I am not one to spend thousands of dollars on furniture to begin with. I just kept looking & looking until I found a set that I liked that was in our price range. We ended up with a BRU set that we're very happy with.

I had my very expensive childhood furniture set until I moved back home after college- I hated it throughout Jr. High & HS and couldn't wait to get rid of it. Finally my parents bought me a new set when I moved back home. They didn't wwant to buy me a new set earlier since they spent so much money on it originally!

Our set (still finishing up the room)

Good luck with your decision!

I went really practical. Since we needed two cribs, we found very reasonable ones in BBB. We wouldn't have room for forever cribs that convert. also, I know as the babies get older, I want to be able to get them "cool" toddler beds,, i.e. the little tyke red racing car bed, or the princess bed.

Re: Is it truly worth it?

We went with the "splurge" set. For the crib, armoire and large dresser it was $2700. My IL's contributed $1000, so that's $1700 for us. We had found the set a while ago, but felt it was too expensive. After looking many other places, we just didn't find anything that we liked, so we decided to just go for it. It's a beautiful set and we plan on using it for a quite a few years.

I got my furniture from Buy Buy Baby. I didn't find anything I really liked at BRU. I was able to find something I liked that was also reasonable at BBB.

Re: Is it truly worth it?

IMHO, I think it is definately worth it. When my sister and I were younger, my parents got us a really good bedroom set and I ended up taking it with me when I moved out! They also got good sets for my brothers and they still use theirs also (of course at that time, they didn't have conversion cribs, but the dressers stood the test of time).

I got the Behr's furniture. We also spend more than we initially planned and we also live in an apartment and hope to one day more into a house. But, we feel that at least we will have the baby's furniture when we do move. So, for us it is definately worth it.

I completely agree.

The crib I got at BRU is convertible to a toddler bed, then a full size bed. And yes, it's made of pine or some other less expensive wood, but I know I will want to change the decor at some point and will pass on that furniture to baby #2.

I am not understanding alot of the posts. I do agree that behrs has probably great sets (havent been there yet) but what does baby furniture have to do with later on furniture? Whether I spend 2000 plus for a bdrm set or 1000 total, I plan to buy an older child a bdrm set that is not baby furniture. I think whatever I buy will end up going out after all my children are out of their "tiny"years. IMO I would keep finances in perspective. Find a set that you love and go for it!

Well, a lot of people get furniture that is not really "baby" furniture. The crib converts to a bed, the dressers are simple and timeles. At least I know this is what we did.

Re: Is it truly worth it?

we got ours at BBB, and didnt pay all that much. We bought 2 cribs and are convertable to toddler and day beds, that they will use for a very long time, as well as the dressers.

I thought everyone was buying children furniture and expecting a teenager to use it.
I guess thats true if you get regular furniture that can be used forever maybe it does seem practical instead of buying furniture 2xs.
