is it true that kids will use the potty when theyre ready?

i am getting really frustrated with my DD. she is almost 3 and we've been working on potty training for months. she is pretty good at recognizing when she needs to pee and walking over to the potty chair, pulling down her pants and going. but she just out and out refuses to poop on it, and so she goes in her underwear or asks me to put a "baby diaper" on her. she has some constipation issues and poop isn't always easy for her, so i understand her skittishness. but she will not pee in a strange toilet, so whenever we go somewhere i always put a diaper on her. bedtime and nap time i put a diaper on her too. i tell her all the time about being a big girl, and cognitively she completely understands that big girls go pee and poop in the potty. but she insists that she is a "baby" whenever i call her a big girl. so what do i do? just keep doing what I'm doing and wait for her to be ready? is it really true that one day it just clicks for them? i read the three day potty stuff, but I'm not sure we are ready for that level of intensity. plus i have a 10 month old at home to take care of too.

help!

Re: is it true that kids will use the potty when theyre ready?

In the case of my childern, yes.
I personally never stressed over 'potty training' - The potty was there, he (they) KNOW what it's for .......

My older son was 3.5 when he was ready.
And when it was done, it was done. There was no diaper to go to sleep, diaper to go in the car, diaper to take a nap, diaper to go to the mall, he's "pee trained but not poop trained" etc - When he was ready to lose the diaper, he did. And that was the end of it.

My younger son will be 3 next week and he's the same way. He knows when he has to go, he'll TELL you he's going to poop, and go hide somewhere, but he's just not ready for the toilet.

Whatever. Being potty trained at 1.5 or 2 vs. 3 or 4 doesn't make or break successful adults Chat Icon

I didn't push my DD at all until she was ready and potty training was the easiest thing ever. She was 3.5 and basically trained herself, no issues.

Same with my DS. I tried earlier and a month after he turned 3, done.

It was a lot easier on all of us this wayChat Icon

This exactly for both boys. Only difference is my 2 year old will tell me he has to go and understands, but doesn't go in the corner. He has pee'd on the potty too, but still goes way more in the diaper.
My DS1 was 3.5 as well when he was trained for everything in a week. Only did a month with pull-ups at night and woke every night dry.

Re: is it true that kids will use the potty when theyre ready?

YES! Well, mostly yes.

With DS I tried a sort of modified 3 day method. He was a few months away from 3 and my hours at work were dropped so I had some time. I tried the first day and he peed on the floor a few times. But he got the hang of the peeing thing within a few days (mostly) I think. Nighttime and when we would be in the car, I still used pull-ups because I just couldn’t deal with it all over.

Poop – yup – it was a different thing. After not too long, he was dry at night and he didn’t wear pull-ups anymore. But, when he had to poop, he’d ask for a pull-up. And if we didn’t give him one, he’d cry and whine and then just hold it. And after a couple of days it as just too sad and we were afraid of it becoming more traumatic.

So, this pull-up thing went on…and on….and on. We tried encouraging, bribing, whatever we could and he wouldn’t budge. If we would tell him no more pull ups, he’d just hold it until it was just too awful and pitiful. I was too afraid to end up in the emergency room with him so we’d relent.

New Year’s we told him that was it. He was on board and then…he wasn’t. Same thing all over again. The doctor told us not to push to let it go for a bit, and we would, but it wouldn’t change. It really was so weird. He didn’t seem scared, his poops weren’t hard, we just couldn’t figure it out. Then, about a month ago (yes, DS is 4 ½ and had been otherwise essentially potty trained since he was 3) one morning I woke up to DS next to my bed. “Mommy, I did poopy on the potty.” To which I responded “Oh, you did?” “YES!” So I asked ,”Is it still there?” (because he told us once before he did it b/c he wanted whatever prize we had offered him.) “Yes.” So, I went and looked and he had done it. On the big potty. All by himself. And since then he’s done it every day without looking back. We have no idea what happened or why, but I guess he decided he was ready. So weird!!

This exactly! We waited till our kids were really and truly ready, that was 3.5 for both. Meant a lot fewer accidents to deal with Chat Icon

My DD will be 3 in 2 months and refuses to go on the potty, but she knows when she is peeing and pooping. She'll stop whatever she is doing to announce she is peeing/pooping but when we ask her to go on the potty she says no. Most mornings she wakes up dry and as soon as I put on a new pull up she pees. I've tried putting her on the potty as soon as she wakes up but she doesnt go. I want to try potty training her this summer but I really do think they have to be ready and one day it will just click for them.

Was for us. We tried training DS around 2 1/2, but there was just a lot of screaming and crying and frustration. Physically he could do it - his diapers were dry most of the day and always in the morning, so I knew there was no issue there. He just wasn't ready. So every morning when he woke up and every night before bed, I'd ask if he wanted to go on the potty. If not, I just told him okay, maybe later - never made a big deal about it. One morning when he was about 3 1/2, he woke up, said he wanted to go on the potty and that was it - instantly "trained". I really don't think "training" is the right word for it, but basically he was ready and did it no problem. We never had an accident and never had an issue with poop. Easiest potty training ever!

I completely believe this. DD just turned 3 and flat out refuses to use the potty. She understands what she needs to do, but just chooses not to. She knows when she poops, pees and even asks to be changed!!!! At this point I'm not pressing the issue and I'll let her decide when she's ready. Who cares when she's trained; it means nothing later on in the child's life and has no impact on their adult life what so ever.

My son is 2.5 and shows zero interest. He knows when he has to go, asks to be changed etc but when I have mentioned potty he says no and gets upset. I plan on trying this summer bc I am due in September but if it doesn't work then I will wait until he's ready.

I never sweated it or forced the issue. At 3y3m we ditched the diapers cold turkey and my DD was fully trained in less than three days. Never had an accident after she was trained.

Before that she fought it and would only intermittently use the potty. She just wasn't ready. But when she finally was ready, potty training was a piece of cake.

In my case (x3) it clicked for them when I said it clicked. When I was half-hearted with it, so were they. When I had enough they were trained. I always took the little potty out at 24 months casually and they were interested...until they weren't. When I pulled the plug on the diapers, they had no other choice. I can't remember my girls as clearly, but my son trained less than a year ago and I know for the first couple of weeks it was really hard because he'd freak out in public toilets, but we powered through and it was done. Full disclosure: he is 3.5 and sleeps with a pull-up ( girls never did) which we call his "nighttime underwear" Chat Icon

2/3 of my kids had late birthdays and needed to be trained BY 3 for nursery, so we literally had no other choice. Wouldn't you know, both of them were trained by 2 years 9 months; the middle child was 3 exactly. I KNOW every kid is not like mine, but in my case I believe my lack of patience with the whole thing facilitated the training.

Good luck...she'll be trained one way or another and, trust me, it will soon be a faint memory! Chat Icon

Re: is it true that kids will use the potty when theyre ready?

I have three kids and I trained them at 18 months, 24 months and 2.5 years. In my opinion, it's easier to train when they are just under or around the 2 year mark. Anything past 2.5 (when the terrible twos get really intense) and they can be really stubborn and defiant. Of course, this doesn't apply to every child, but this has been my experience and observation.

Fwiw, none of my kids displayed any interest in the potty, but when we went cold turkey with the three day method it really worked for them. And like a pp said, much of the success really depends on how consistent/patient you are about training.

Good luck!

yes!!! i think so.

DS was potty trained when he was 3 years, 2 months. I waited till I was really sure he was ready (he would often do poops on the potty, but not peeps). He had one accident, was horrified, and that was that. Not another diaper!

With DD, I had to at least try to help her get potty trained before she started preschool. So, I started when she was 2 years, 9 or 10 months. It. was. torture. She was just not ready!!! I feel like it took her a good 9 months to be potty trained. At 3 1/2, she still wears a pull up for napping and bedtime.

If you can wait, I would wait!

Re: is it true that kids will use the potty when theyre ready?

By 3 my son had gone pee/poop on the potty MAYBE 15 times total since we started training when he turned 2. I've always heard they have to be ready etc etc so we never really pressured him at all

Right after he turned 3 he stopped using the potty completely & wouldn't even sit on it!!! I chalked it up to me being pregnant & backed off completely. 3 weeks after having his little brother he turned 3 1/2 & still showed no signs of giving up his diapers. I decided to do the 3 day method & throw out diapers.... He was potty trained in 1 day with only a handful of accidents

He did hold his poop for 4 days but I just let him figure it out & he eventually pooped on the potty when he couldn't hold it anymore. My son was going to the potty by himself without even telling me or my husband within a week of training. However if I hadn't thrown out the diapers I think he would still be in them now (this all happened a month ago)

Good luck!!!!

No. It will happen when you are ready!
My DS was potty trained ( fully) at 19 months, because I was ready!!!
My brother has a boy and a girl, both were potty trained before 2.
With DS it took us 4 days. I always say we trained him before he learned to say no to things!

Poop is MUCH harder than pee. It's a nightmate and I hear that from so many people. Don't stress it. She won't be shitting her pants in HS. Lol

This.

DS 1 trained pretty quickly at 3y4m (we had to find a weekend that we didn't have a million things going on so we could focus our efforts on that). It took a couple more months to get number 2 figured out.

Thankfully - he'd only go at home and I knew his cues so I was able to catch him and bring him to the potty. After some bribery it worked.

Yep.

And she hated to poop in the potty thingy. She'd pee in them but not poop. She did that on a toilet only (with a ring). Once we figured that out - everyone was happier.

I waited PAST when she was ready! LOL I couldn't have cared less when she got potty trained and everyone else wanted me to push her. Finally for school she had to be trained. But she was already pretty ready by that point. She would find places to go when she had to go poop. Pee she'd let us know as soon as she was done that she needed a new diaper. She HATED to be wet or have stone in her butt. LOL

She was ready I was lazy

So when she was introduced to her own sized potty she pee'd like a pro.

Then when she realized she could use a step and sit up on the big potty, she pooped with pride! LOOK at my POOP!

Chat Icon

Its when they want to.

I broke her of the different potty thing early I never wanted her to be the type that could only poo at home (I have relatives like that.. GROWN relatives). So we made sure she saw me going outside of home (a lot) and also took her along.

Best of luck.

Like everyone else has said. She will be fine.. its not like college apps ask age of successful poop on potty, type of rocker, size of crib, pre-k school grades or what their milestones dates were.
