I don't believe it's true. I think they all go through this stage. I was talking to my girlfriend and her kids were both picky eaters and are getting better with age.

Growing up, I was a good eater. I would try anything at least once. Where as my brother would only eat:

Cold grilled cheese sandwiches
McDonald's hamburgers (my mother had to save the wrappers for when she made her own Chat Icon )
Cheerios with OJ not milk
Mac and Cheese
Pizza

and that was it for him. Now he will eat anything.

I know there are somethings that I ate of ton of when PG that my daughter will not eat and this child LOVES LOVES LOVES avocado and I have never eaten one in my life.

I have heard that there is some scientific evidence that the taste of the food you eat does transfer to the amniotic fluid- when the child swallows this in utero it has been said that s/he can 'taste' differences depending upon what the mother eats.
I don't know how true this is, but I saw it on this national geographic channel special.

No it's not true. It's an old wive's tale. I think the way kids eat is more environmental. For example, BIL doesn't eat ANY vegetables. His sons don't like vegetables because they've heard him say how "gross" they are.Chat Icon

I eat all kinds of foods yet my daughter is picky. So I don't think it is true at all.

It can't possibly be true. I'm a very picky eater and I'm the only one in my family. So, since I am one of 8, I don't see how it could be true.

My sister is the pickiest eater and my niece eats everything- so I don't think there's any truth to your MIL's theory.

Well I've definitely heard of kids having a distinct preference for a food that mom ate alot of during pregnancy so it seems like the opposite could be true as well.

Not true at all! I'm extremely picky and I don't eat veggies and my DS will eat a rock if you put it near his mouth.

Oh, Please! That's absurd, as all old wives' tales are. However, if you are a picky eater, you might be, without realizing it, only feeding him what you think you might like. As he gets older, try giving him a wide variety and, if you can, eat the same foods with him. Children have a tendency to imitate what they see from their parents.

I think it's a combination of things:

it's an old wives tale, a stage he's going through, and your MIL being annoying again.

My SIL is THE pickiest eater on the planet and she gets pickier by the day. Her oldest daughter is just like her - picky picky picky. Her youngest daughter, however, will eat anything you put in front of her.

Re: Is it true or is my MIL just being annoying again?

Not true! It is all in what you offer him as he begins eating table food. Most people think "Ok..my kid is a toddler so he will only eat chicken nuggets and mac and cheese", so that is what parents serve and in turn it becomes the toddlers staple menu.

If you start early on, giving them a variety of foods and force yourself to eat the things you don't like in front of them, they will be good eaters eventually.

I agree with this. I had a hard time with it myself as my mom never cooked veggies and I had a hard time serving them to my kids.I still only like raw veggies even though i had eaten cooked ones an I liked them..My girls eat all kinds of food that I never would even try!
