Is it time to see an RE?

Month 7 is down the drain...my gyno. said not to contact her until after 6 months (back when I saw her in August). I have an appointment scheduled with her for the end of January, but should I just skip over her and just go straight to an RE? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Is it time to see an RE?

Are you over 35? .... Are your cycles regular?

I think these are both things to take into account. Typically (and as frustrating as it is) they say healthy couples under 35 should try for a year before seeing an RE.

If I were you, I would give a call to your gyno to get his/her opinion. Also, see if you could possibly get a sooner appointment (if there are cancellations...)

I am going to gyno tomorrow after 5 months and no luck. This is the question I am asking my doc...I'll let you know her response.

i waited exactly 6 months to see an RE - but my cycles were all over the place and i didnt O regularly.

if your cycles are abnormal in any way i would go straight to the RE. otherwise see what your ob/gyn has to say and then make the decision.

Are your cycles irregular? If they are, I would def. just go to the RE because they will know what is best for you. Good luck!Chat Icon

Re: Is it time to see an RE?

Thanks girls..I turned 30 in August and my cycles are regular. That's what I think is more upsetting. They are on time each month and I have never really had any issues. I think I will call for an appointment after the holidays because I guess it wouldn't hurt. Is this something that is covered by insurance?

Depends on the insurance - we have Aetna and most of the treatments are covered to a certain extent. IVF is not

If you're 30 and you have regular cycles.. i hate to say it but you sound perfectly normal Chat Icon
I'm 37 and my gyno wanted me to wait at least 7-8 months before going to an RE.
I'd put the question to your gyno and see what they have to say - and maybe call your insurance co and see what is covered. that may help influence your decision

I'm going to my gyno next week and will also ask this. I think I have an LPD. B6 isn't helping. It's typically 10 days and this month was 9. We'll see what next month brings. I'm hoping my doc will run the tests, but friends of mine that went through TTC issues told me to go see an RE. I'm trying not to "jump the gun" but if I have an issue that needs fixing, there's no since in waiting the full year, ya know?

You can have regular periods and still not be ovulating. Based on my own personal experience, I would completely disregard your OB/GYN and just go right ahead to an RE. OB/GYN's aren't fertility experts and they also are not very proactive about fertility issues. It cannot hurt to see an RE, have them run some tests, and see what the deal is. You might find out that nothing is wrong and then you can chalk it up to timing, it can take a while to get pregnant even in perfectly healthy couples. However, if they do find some issue you will be happy to know what is going on and then you can take steps to correct whatever the issue is.

I am always 100% for seeing an RE. It can never hurt and they are the BEST people to deal with it when it comes to any and all fertility issues. Lots of luck!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would see an RE. I've had a LPD the past 2 months and mentioned it to my RE and they gave me Clomid this cycle to correct the defect. Right now I am on CD17 (I have long cycles) so we'll see if it helps with the timing of AF unless I get pregnant this cycle. It's very hard to get pregnant or worse, sustain a pregnancy with a LPD. Good luck. Chat Icon

I have Aetna too and IVF was covered. 3 lifetime attempts.

It's all about how your company funds the insurance.

Call your insurance company and find out if you need a referral, and what IF treatments if any they cover.

Met with the gyno today...DH is getting sent for a semen analysis, I am getting blood work, progesterone levels checked and some test with a really long name to check the tubes.

She said after all that, then we'll sit down and figure out if we need to see someone else.

As for when to see the doc, she said it was fine to come in whenever, you don't have to wait 6 months or a year for a consultation.

Re: Is it time to see an RE?

Preggo crashing-I got pregnant my 8th month of TTC and when I was month 7, I sought out a RE-Dr. Braverman. I was 28, this was in June. I spoke to him in May-I have other health issues as well and I am glad I did-he increased my prednisone once I got a BFP and low and behold, I am 29 weeks preggo.

I am a big fan of advocating for yourself-I agree with PP's-you could not be Oing and getting AF or you just might not have hit the nail on the head. But remember, it doesn't have to be you! You can be perfectly able to conceive, but your DH could have male IF-this was also one of our concerns because DH was over 35.

Re: Is it time to see an RE?

I was nervous about going to a RE. I guess it was hard to admit that I would need help getting pg. Let me say... it was the best decision I could make. I feel they keep more of an eye on me then my regular doc. I would make an appt with a RE.

Another preggo crashing. I was at my 7th month mark when I took it upon myself to see an RE. It turned out that my DH had slight motility issues. I was 32, always had normal periods..but I didn't want to wait anymore. So, after 2 1/2 months with the RE, we got our BFP. An OB can only do so much...a RE's sole job is to get you pregnant. For me, it was the best decision. Not saying that I wouldn't of gotten pregnant anyway...who knows. But I wanted to "speed up" the process if possible. HTH!

Just wanted to say THANK YOU to the preggo's crashing! A lot of us have no experience with this and just write based on what we have read. Your real life experiences are very helpful and appreciated. THANK YOU!

Re: Is it time to see an RE?

As someone who waited 1 yr & then did IVF (at about 1yr and a half):

According to one study, 25% of couples get pregnant in the first month of trying, while 60% of couples trying to get pregnant do so within six months. On the other hand, 75% of couples get pregnant within nine months while 80% get pregnant within a year. Finally, some 90% of couples get pregnant within eighteen months of trying.

This is from http://www.gettingpregnant.co.uk/howlongwillittake.htm

My opinion: You are young... give yourself time, use OPKs (to be sure you are ovulating and to "know" your cycle)... before you take the leap to more aggressive tx (it's not easy & not without symptoms). You can get tested in the meanwhile. I know plenty of people who got preggo month 8 and 9.

Re: Is it time to see an RE?

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!! Thanks for listening and offering to share your experiences, advice, and support. I DID end up making an appointment for next Tuesday, the 29th.

I'm not trying to be impatient or selfish. I know it takes time, but for some reason I just feel like I know I need assistance. I have several family members (including my cousin who needed a surrogate to carry her twins) who have had issues and I don't want to wait too long to figure out what's going on. If the Dr. says that I'm healthy and that everything is normal, I will proceed without assistance. I just want to know. So eager for Tuesday's appointment!!!
