Is it still supposed to hurt (BFing/pumping related)?

I have been exclusively pumping since DD was 1 week old (she is now 6 weeks). I also EP'd with DS (after 2 months of a bad latch), and I don't remember it hurting this much.

The thing is, it doesn't hurt while I am pumping, but after. My nips are very sensitive to clothes rubbing against them, and when I hold my DC's, if they put direct "pressure", I see stars. I would think by now, my boobs would be used to it, no?

I don't think it has to do with the size of the shields..I use bigger ones...the same size I used with DS. And I don't really experience pain while pumping, only in between sessions. Sometimes I feel a shooting pain thru my boobs too. Is this normal or is something wrong? TIA

Is the pain all the time in between pumping? Or just randomly?

A few ideas.

When I don't wear a bra, and have no support - my boobs HURT. I have to wear a bra all day and all night.

Could it be a painful letdown? I also have this, and it sounds like the shooting pain you described.

Or it could be a clogged duct, that feels better when pump and then the pain comes back as you fill up.

I used to get the shooting pain too and I think it was due to my letdown. The pain after pumping I dont know about as I never pumped. I will tell you that I EBF my first child for a long, long time and thought it wouldn't hurt as much with my second but it did..however it only lasted a couple of weeks.

With you getting pain at 6 weeks there might be something going on - an infection? the shields? I really dont know..I hope some other pumpers might jump on this thread and help you out.Chat Icon

You could also try your local la leche group and they might have some insight for you.

Do you use lanolin cream right after you pump? If not, try that- it will help keep your nips moisturized. And I know you said you don't think the shield size is the problem, but I would try going up a size and see if it makes a difference. I always thought I was using the right size (I'm an occasional pumper), until I had to EP for 3 days after we found out my son had a milk protein allergy. The LC in the hospital was watching me pump and she was like "Don't your nipples get sore?" And I was like "Yea, but I thought that was normal." She said it looked like the shield was too small. So she got me the next size up and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Chat Icon

It's all the time, and especially if they rub against something, like my bra, clothes or my kids lol.

I don't feel the shooting pain or anything while I pump, just after.

I have an appt with my OB on Tuesday, so I will def mention it to her. And I will also try the next size up shields in the meantime. I have a feeling something is not right :/

Thanks ladies!

the shooting pains after you pump and the sensitivity reminds me of when I had thrush. I didn't have the typical thrush symptoms except that pain. Are your nips red at all or cracked?

I'd call your OC and get a script for nystatin or mucipricon

How much/often are you pumping?

I remember trying to increase my supply/making a freezer stach and my nipples were sore. Like raw!!!!

my vote is thrush.
never had it with my first.

this time around, just treated it for the second time.

starts off annoying, then it hurts...check baby's cheeks..any white patches?
red ring around nipples?

They are red and sore, not cracked.

She does not have spots in her cheeks.

I guess I won't wait for my appointment and I'll call them tomorrow.

call tomorrow. Alexa never had teh white spots in teh mouth. All I had was red nip and burning sensation and the shooting pains. They think it may have been a combo of yeast and bacteria so they gave me teh mucipricon. WOW 2 days later I felt great!
