is it normal to feel like this after birth.....

i always hear about postpartum depression but i dont know if this is it, or its normal.

i gave birth to my 2nd and last child a month ago (tubes are tied now) and i just feel sad sometimes out of nowhere. its not all the time, it just pops up out of nowhere. i find myself sad that im not pregnant anymore (something as crazy as realizing my feet finally stopped swelling and are normal made me totally sad that im not pregnant....that was made me realize this might not be normal??...who gets sad their feet arent swollen??)

ive read postpartum dep. involves not bonding with or putting your child in danger, and i dont have any of that. its just a sad feeling i cant get rid of.

so is it normal to just get sad and want to cry? if so, how long does it last?? i didnt have this with my first child.

I think its totally normal. You have so many hormones running through your body that sometimes its hard to control your emotions.

If you feel like its getting worse, then I would seek out some help. Maybe a therapy session or a group session. Someplace where you can express how you feel without judgement.

i had pp but mine came in more anxiety and waves of sadness. and i always cared for the baby so it wasnt that. it was a feeling of overwhelming anxiety ....sadness....despair....but never felt i couldnt care for the baby.

I had the same type of post partum sadness. I would just feel so sad over nothing. Like I would be sad that I couldn't love DS enough. Does that even make sense?! I dont think I realized how sad I felt at thentime until I started to feel better. I am now 4 months pp and around 3 months I finally started to really feel like myself again. The sadness went away around 2 months.

I also had a strong urge to be pregnant again and I missed it so much. When I would see pregnant people I would get jealous that I wasn't pregnant!! Is it normal? I don't know but at least if it is crazy you're not alone!! I think it was just crazy post partum hormones. As long as its not uncontrollable sadness and it isn't all the time I think it's ok.

Feel better!!

Totally normal. Your hormones are all over the place so your feelings go in waves.
I remember after my first DD out of nowhere I ran into her room, slammed the door and sat on the floor hysterical crying. I didn't even know WHY I was crying. But it happened occasionally for a few weeks then it stopped.
After my second DD it took a few weeks for the random crying to happen but it did and then subsided

Re: is it normal to feel like this after birth.....

My Dr said it is normal to have these waves and said it is usually due to pregnancy hormones which can increase, esp with breast feeding. What would help me is I would go for a walk or do some shopping when I felt like this. The activity helped it dissipate for me. I hope you feel better.

* a perfect example of this is when I was leaving the hospital. I was hysterical sobbing waiting for DH to pull up the car and the only reason why was because I felt vulnerable that I could not longer protect DS from the real world now that he is out of my belly. Also when I would hold my belly after DS was born and realized I was no longer preg. I guess the hormones hit me hard lol

I had the same thing. Totally normal. My DH had to call my best friend to come over about a week after I had my son because I couldn't stop crying for 30 minutes. It will pass! Congratulations on your new baby!

Congrats on your new baby. I think the waves of sadness are normal. I got them really bad leading up to DH going back to work and I would cry at the drop of a hat. If you feel that it may be a problem say within the next two weeks, call your doctor because you never harm anyone with asking.

literally as soon as DD was out of me i had an overwhelming sadness and wanted to be pregnant again. i know some of that is because i delivered at 33w and i felt like the rest of the pregnancy was stolen from me. but still it was def a few months of being sad and missing it and wanting to be pregnant again.

i did have PPD and PTSD due to traumatic birth but I did not have the classic PPD symptoms of lack of bonding or being able to care for the baby. on the contrary it was the opposite and I became fiercely protective and control-freak about her feedings and sleeping. even now its really hard for me to leave her.

im not sure i would say you have PPD. if its not really impairing your ability to function normally i would just give it some more time. if more time goes by and you just don't feel right definitely tell your doctor. generally the "baby blues" subside within 2-4 weeks and you are still within the normal range to have these feelings. give it some more time but def dont be shy and tell your doctor if more time passes and you dont feel right. I think it's totally normal. I would cry spontaneously over nothing...seriously. Watching Modern Family and burst into tears. Weirdest thing. I think it's just your hormones regulating. Chat Icon

I gave birth 18 days ago, and have had several periods of sadness. My whole pregnancy I couldn't wait to give birth, and now that I have, there are times when I feel so sad that I'm no longer pregnant. I keep thinking about how I felt at 37/38 wks pregnant, and wish I could go back to that time. It's such a bizarre feeling. I also keep feeling anxious that my maternity leave is going to fly, and I won't have enough time to bond with LO.

I know this is due to lack of sleep and jumping hormone levels. My sister who has 2 kids told me its the "baby blues" and is pretty common. Hopefully it passes soon.

Re: is it normal to feel like this after birth.....

Sounds like hormones. They are going nuts now. I remember twin1 was still in the nicu and we were bringing twin 2 to the ped and I was wearing a maternity tank that was now big on me. I started crying on the way there that I missed my belly. 2 seconds later I was fine like "so whats for dinner". I would cry out of nowhere but it seemed to stop when twin 1 came home (9 days). Im not sure it it was just hormones going back to normal, that she was home or that I was too busy to cry.

Try to get out and go shopping eve for a short trip, or coffee with a friend. Like try to get YOU back to normal. I think that helped me a lot at like a month when I started getting depressed.

This is how PPD was for me as well. I would cry hysterically over everything. We'd be watching tv and a commercial for a cancer treatment center would come on and I'd be balling my eyes out for an hour because I didn't want to get cancer and die and leave DD without a mother. It was ridiculous. My poor DH didn't know what to do. But I had severe anxiety over everything. I remember just falling to the floor in hysterics on a few occasions. I thought it was just a normal part of having a newborn. Or maybe I was in denial. Finally at 8 months I called the doctor and they gave me a script. It was life-changing.

I think it's normal to have a certain level of sadness, especially if your DC is your last one. I don't think bonding with your child (or not) is any indication of PPD. But if at any point you feel uncomfortable I would urge you to talk to your doctor and see what they say. I wish I hadn't waited.

I had this too! So jealous of pregnant people!

It sounds like what you have is the baby blues. So normal because your hormones are all leveling out.

I hope you feel better too.
