Is it me, or is anyone else finding shopping in...
The supermarket is getting more and more expensive- I know the price of gas is up, but my goodness, I spent 80.00 and that is with sales and I cannot believe how little of the amount of stuff I got for the money. I usually shop @ Stop and Shop, but they seem to be the so expensive lately, Any shopping tips besides the usual coupons and sales? Any recomendadtions of where to save the most and what store? We are def. going to go to BJ's this week.

YES!!!
I got enough for 2 nights for dinner & spent over 50.00!!
This is why I cannot wait till the veggies and fruits are in season, and you can get them at farmstands..
Do you have an Aldi's or a Price Right? They are very inexpensive...compared to the grocery stores I find. They are the kind of stores that u pay 10 cents for a bag, or bring your own. The cashiers do not bag your items, they just put them in another cart, and you go to the "bagging station" and bag it. (Kind of like BJS or Sams)

I'm finding that the sales don't seem to be as good anymore. Especially on meat. Chicken breast is ranging between $3 and $4 a pound. That's crazy! I went to sam's last week to buy meat because I had a credit to use. It was cheaper, but not by much.

I have been saying this for a while. I'm in the city so it's a little more expensive than outside NYC, but it has gone way up in the past couple months.
I have been getting a lot of stuff when we go to Target. I stocked up on butter - it's nearly $6/lb in the city and it was $3.50/lb at Target the other day.

Headed towards one....possibly. Already in one...no. To be in a recession we have to have a negative decline in GDP for two consecutive quarters. We have not had one yet.
Groceries have gone up, as a pp said, due to fuel costs. Transporting is more expensive..so..so are our groceries.
edited for spelling

edited for spelling that is very true. the definition of a recession is 2 quarters in a row of negative GDP.

Try less of a chain supermarket. When I lived on LI, I always found great prices at Pats meat market or Guinta's meat farms. I'm dont know where you live, but smaller places usualy have better prices,

i see it too!!
dh went to the supermarket yesterday. he spent $250 and the fridge ISN'T full!!!
i've started to cook larger batches of things and freezing them. i've also started to make a few meat-less meals a week. dh doesn't care for the meat-less dinners, but it's the things we have to do.

I usually go to Stop and Shop and Pathmark. I find at Pathmark I usually save as much as I spend. For example, I spent $45 there the other day, but I saved $41. I thought that was pretty good. It happened the time before that as well.

Re: Is it me, or is anyone else finding shopping in...
not only gas and out of season veggies, it's also the wheat shortage (the price of wheat has skyrocketed).
Also, our economy is tanking and there likely is an inflation factor......
it's all adding up

Re: Is it me, or is anyone else finding shopping in...
we joke that if we don't have anything for dinner- it's cheaper to get take out- then to go to Waldbaums by our house
we spend $60-$90 and get nothing
since I am at woodbury commons every 2 weeks- I started going to the super walmart there- and I get tons of food for such good prices
ex- Jake loves tropicana fruit punch and drinks it like it's water
at Waldbaums - it's close to $3
at Walmart- it's $1
I buy 10 to 12 each time I go - the savings is amazing
and that's just on 1 item
I used to be so against Walmart- but sometimes you just have to give in

BEth I go to that WalMart Too!!! It is right by my house, like 10 minutes away. I too was anti-walmart, but when you have kids, you cannot beat their prices and nw that they carry organic stuff, All the better.

Family Dollar and Walmart are great for clothes detergent too. 100 oz. of All is $5 at Family Dollar. They had it on sale for $4 last week.

I try to avoid the grocery store except for meat and produce. Target's prices are almost half of what the grocery store charges on a lot of things.

I buy deli, produce, milk, eggs and bread at S&S. and a few other items when I need them or if they're on sale. but I buy a lot at Target & BJ's - and save a lot!
