Re: Is it in all cultures that
I am the godmother to my niece and I bought her gown. When my DS was christened I paid for his outfit because it was $450 I couldnt possibly ask the godparents to pay for it and there was no way I was going to let him wear anything else

Re: Is it in all cultures that
I don't know if it's a cultural thing...
As a family (both my mom and dad's side) we always did the godmother buys the gown, the godfather buys a cross.
I've never heard of a church charging for a baptisim.

There's always a donation involved at a Catholic church.
I'm Irish and the godparents do not buy the Christening outfits. Then again, I'm sure in some families that is the tradition.
I am godmother to my cousin's son, and she picked out his Christening outfit herself.

Re: Is it in all cultures that
On my mother's side of the family (German), we have a Christening outfit that is passed down from each generation. I beleive it was first worn by my great aunt in 1914. My grandmother is the keeper of the outfit and it has to be handwashed and stored a special way. My grandmother wore it, my mother wore it, I wore it, and when I have a child, he/she will wear it.
I do not know if this is a cultural thing or if it is just my family that does this.

Interesting...
I'm my nephew's godmother and my husband is his neice's godfather and in both instances I don't remember there being a request for donation... I'll have to ask my husband if he remembers paying anything.
I could be totally wrong...

Oh wow, I think that is so nice! I plan to start this tradition with my family by having my wedding gown made into a christening gown, using it for my children and passing it on. Hopefully my children will want to use it for their children and so on...

The godparents 99% of the time would never be involved with that or even know about it. It's paid ahead of time, almost always by the parents.

do you know why people say that? It's a phrase from the early 1900's. When the Irish started coming to the USA, we weren't like, we all know that. But legend states that others saw the irish as dirty, cheap, uneducated, poor folk. I've been hearing this all my life (being my great grandparents all came thru Ellis Island).

Its amazing what they cost right?? I bought my nephew's and it was $300!!
I understand that it's made of Irish linen and it was imported from Ireland, but come on!! It's for a baby! Not to mention, my sister took him out of the gown shortly after the baptism so it wasn't like he wore it all day either!!!
I can only imagine what it will cost to have one made, though I'm hoping not as much...
