Is DD a brat or is this normal?
DD is only 13 & a half months old & she is so strong willed. When she doesn't get her way, she lays on the floor hysterical crying. She screams her head off over everything (when I take her away from the stairs, give her food she doesn't like, wants to walk in a different direction, when I'm changing her diaper, if I take something out of her hand after asking for it a million times)
She's just so difficult, everything's a battle. She tosses her binkey on the floor a hundred times while I'm changing her for bedtime, throws her food everywhere, & has a meltdown when I'm not entertaining her every second.
She's such a loving, happy, sweet little thing but she's such a hand full. I can't imagine all kids are like this, I never thought it would be this hard.
I'm afraid she is turning into a brat. What can I do?
sorry this is so long, thanks for reading!

Some kids are harder than others.
You can't let in... Because then it never stops. Just stick to your guns. She's learning by good and bad... She's testing what all will do. My son was a head banger when he didn't get what he wanted. Kids are smart... They make themselves hard to ignore.

Re: Is DD a brat or is this normal?
Totally normal.
Give her choices. Do you want this food or that food?
Tell her throwing food means you don't get anymore. so you say "Throw food all done" & take it all away.
I agree not to give in because it's the only way she'll learn. I would step over my kids on the floor. Give them a minute or two & then say "All done? Do you want a hug?" For the most part, it would work. Sometimes, they'd need more time to calm down.

Re: Is DD a brat or is this normal?
Normal.
As soon as dd turned 1 literally to the day she did a 360 and became this wild child. Everything was a fight. Everything was tantrum. We had a very tough year. She's over 2 now and has calmed a bit but we still have gettig days/weeks where we revert back.
I started doing timeouts with her at 1. I know she didn't understand but I needed her to get away from the situation and needed her to sit for a minute.
I agree with giving her choices. I let dd pick her clothes when she gives me hard time.
Be strict and don't give in. If she learns now you are not giving in she will learn.
Hang in there.

I thought I was reading about my DD!
Seems it's normal...though when you are in the thick of it, you feel like you have the worst child in the world and you somehow created a brat. Trust me I know.
But the terrible 2's really do start in their second year of life. And seem to go on until 5 from what I have heard!

Re: Is DD a brat or is this normal?
That sounds like DD.
It's normal. She is asserting herself and finding her independence and testing limits. Don't give in and start setting rules. We started time-outs with DD at that age - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but she knows what the time-outs are for.

I think its normal, but definitely trying.DD is 11 months old and as soon as you say no she will start screaming at the top of her lungs. It is a battle because she is so strong willed. I would love to hear advice or tips from parents who dealt with this.

Re: Is DD a brat or is this normal?
It's comforting to know they are all bratty Thanks! I'm glad it's not just her. We had a pediatrician appointment today & he said she is to young to discipline & to just distract her to something else because she won't listen to no.
I don't know about that, I think she knows "no" & I'm not just going to let her get her way all the time.

Re: Is DD a brat or is this normal?
I don't think it's ever to young to discipline. I mean I know she's to young to understand certain stuff but you can't just let her get away stuff either.
I would try to not use the no and explain why. "You'll get a boo boo if you push that" kinda thing and then distract her.
But dd has been walking since 9 months so I needed to discipline and we do timeouts. 1 min for each year.

Is DD a brat or is this normal?
Our house rule was "We don't throw {toys/temper tantrums} we throw kisss. Muh
When DS was too young to talk, I'd say it to him then blow him a kiss. When he could talk a little more, I'd say "do we throw toys" and he'd say no. I asked what we throw and he'd blow me a kiss. He's 4 and I still say it!

That's a great rule! When she bites I tell her "kisses, no biting" sometimes it works. She doesnt bite out of anger, she just thinks it's funny so I don't want to make too big of a deal out of it
