Is anyone's parents terrible gift givers?
My family makes fun of me because growing up I would always complain, but my mom buys the worst stuff. Clothes that i would never wear, jewelry thats not my style and useful stuff.
When i was younger it was so disappointing to never get what i asked for.

My parents were awesome growing up. I always got what I wanted. I now just get a check and we buy what we want.

My parents are great - I give them a list and they get me everything on the list. That way we know it's my style, it fits and it's something I can use.

Re: Is anyone's parents terrible gift givers?
MY family aren't really gift givers at all, rather than get presents all through the year I usually get something like an all expenses paid trip to Florida, or a trip to NY...so it all works out really.

Re: Is anyone's parents terrible gift givers?
My parents are great givers, sometimes my mother gets things I wanted & didn't even ask for, but whenever she buys me clothes, she always gets them too small.
I don't know if that's a hint, or she is delusional, or wishful thinking, or what, but she always get me medium tops when I am usually an extra large. I thought she would have figured that out after she came wedding dress shopping with me, but maybe she doesn't want to insult me. I guess I should tell her.

My MIL does this! She always buys me an XS!
I don't know if it's a hint, or if she really thinks I am that tiny.

My mom always gets me the nicest stuff. Most of it I pick out but when she goes out on her own, she does a great job.

Re: Is anyone's parents terrible gift givers?
My Mom is disabled and cannot shop. She is not savvy enough on the internet nor does she trust its safety to do shopping there. Sometimes, my siblings and I will clue her in to what the grandchildren might want and we get it for her, but as for her children, she prefers to give us money. It may seem impersonal to some, but its what she is able to do with ease and happiness.

Re: Is anyone's parents terrible gift givers?
My mom does pretty good. If I ask for something specific she will get it. There is some stuff she gets on her own that I don't like sometimes, but she doesn't mind if I tell her. She would rather me exchange for something else, than for it to go to waste.

I wouldn't say terrible but definitely not practical. I think my Mom still thinks I'm 10.

Re: Is anyone's parents terrible gift givers?
my parents are great as long as i am specific - i know i am picky - and it is not their fault - so i just tell them exactly what i want - instead of 'i could really use perfume' - i say 'please buy, if you buy perfume, vera wang princess - in a purple bottle - ask the lady' just incase b/c if my parents stray from what i want - i know myself - i know i am not going to like it.
so i just get very specific with them, pick out my own gifts if we are out and i see something i like or just tell them go with a GC!
it is like that with everyone really - b/c i am pretty picky.

My parents give great gifts, but my IL's always give us one big gift, then a big bag full of little gifts and its ALWAYS stuff I never will use, they do this every year and its always stuff my MIL likes or her taste, and mine is totally different.

Re: Is anyone's parents terrible gift givers?
My Dad can't shop because of his disability. I must shop for all of his gifts, including mine. I get what I want but no surprise.
MIL is AWFUL. She never asks anyone what they want/need and buys gifts 6 months to a year ahead of time. Last year, when I was 6 months pg I got regular clothes that I never would have worn anyway and a pasta pot from As Seen on TV.

I'm the same DH knows so I make a list of many items at various prices and say, "Any of this would be greatly appreciated".

Re: Is anyone's parents terrible gift givers?
My Mom too...she'd always get me non-flattering clothing or something that was never quite what I had requested. I always feel guilty bc she spent money on things I'd never wear or use. Now I have kids and she's older so she doesnt really shop for me but she did come through with a pair of super fuzzy multi-colored monster slippers this year in a size 11 (I wear an 9, not small but still not an 11) that I honestly told her I wouldn't wear and would love to exchange them. She took it well.

Re: Is anyone's parents terrible gift givers?
I am so picky and feel bad for anyone that ever has to give me a gift. I half the time don't know what I want so I am amazed when someone else is able to buy me what I didn't know I wanted. My mom spends hours shopping for me and puts lots of thought into all my gifts.
Usually she is very good but sometimes she must think I am 85 and work in the library.

Re: Is anyone's parents terrible gift givers?
My parents and family are amazing gift givers. DH told my mom that he is so lucky to have married into such a generous family. My dad has completely filled our garage with tools for my husband and my mom still buys me all of the girly things that I love.

Re: Is anyone's parents terrible gift givers?
yes and no. I got some things I wanted and other things that are nice but could have used things more functional.
Then I get things from my In-laws that dont' fit I can't return because she removed the tags

Funny story along this theme... Last night when we got to my SIL's house I notice an ugly bra and two pairs of thong underwear hanging on the tree. My niece threw them up there for her Mom to return because they were ugly
