Is anyone not interviewing pediatricians?

Is it necessary?

When I was in L&D they asked if I chose a ped. I haven't since I'm only 26 weeks so I just gave the name of my nephews ped who I know makes rounds there. I've met her several times back when my brother was a baby and had RSV (almost 17 yrs ago) and she is great, but far from me so I won't be using her. I can just give them a new name once I'm admitted to have the babies.

I was anticipating just going to one closer to me off recommendations from here and from friends. Do I really need to meet the Dr. beforehand?

Re: Is anyone not interviewing pediatricians?

I met with one from a larger practice. They are near me and were recommended by a friend. I went to the meet and greet appt without questions and the Dr. obviously knew new mom concerns. I'm glad I met with the doctor and he met me. IMO I felt much more comfortable meeting the doctor and seeing the office.

I'm not planning to meet with or interview oediatricians. I did ask my OB for a recommendation though and then looked up patient reviews of that doctor online to make sure that other parents were happy w the care their child was receiving. I also called the office to find out if they were accepting new patients. The receptionist was very nice and helpful. She offered me the opportunity to meet w the doctor bit I honestly don't even know what questions to ask at this point. So I figure I'll wait to meet the doctor at the hospital when DD is born and worst case scenario if for some reason dh and i are very unhappy with this doctor we can always switch.

i planned to interview my top choice. i had just made the appointment for when i was around 36w. then i ended up delivering at 33w and they mistook her info from me so she wasn't contact by the hospital right away. when i called to cancel the appointment i spoke to the doctor about her in the NICU, and we were able to see her the day after DD came home. but cause DD was in the NICU it didnt really matter who my PED was since they have about a million NICU doctors rotating around anyway.

Re: Is anyone not interviewing pediatricians?

I would at least call them though because the ped I chose wanted new parents to come in. He did a group meet and greet which made it easy for us b/c he ended up answering all our questions anyway.

Re: Is anyone not interviewing pediatricians?

IMO, it doesn't hurt to interview a ped. I met a few that were raved about on LIF and wasn't happy. Since you're on bedrest, obviously you can't interview anyone yet. When you come off, I think it's a good idea to meet a few.

Not sure if you're planning to BF or not, but if you are, finding one that's truly supportive and knowledgeable is really important. If you were thinking about spacing vaccines, keep in mind that not all peds permit it. You'll want to know about their preferred schedule in advance. No matter what, these are the people that are going to take care of your child in case of an emergency. You need to feel comfortable with them. Yes, you can switch, but having a newborn (and two, in your case) is busy... you'll have more time to really look now than after the babies arrive.

This was kinda what I was thinking.

I didn't even think of them wanting me to meet them so maybe I'll call.

Re: Is anyone not interviewing pediatricians?

Be careful though - I know Dr. Georges office doesn't take new patients he only takes newborns. So although you could switch peds in the future you might not be able to switch to a doctor you want.

Is he affiliated with good Sam and in w islip? I think he was one who was highly recommended.

I would take them as newborns since they need to be seen when they leave the hospital.

This. And it just so happened that he was recommended by close family friends as well, both of whom are physicians and have a little girl so I trusted them. And my OB said he takes his FOUR children to this ped. He is supposed to be the BEST. I didn't want to interview him - he knows better than I would, he went to med school.

Re: Is anyone not interviewing pediatricians?

We didn't either. We went with the one my sister used. That Dr. actually didn't do rounds at the hospital I delivered at, so I just picked one that my insurance took.

Dr George won't see them if his office didn't see them in the hospital. It happened to my sister. She delivered at Stony Brook and saw the ped there then when there she called Dr Georges office to make an appt for the first appt after the hospital and they wouldn't see her since technically she was no longer considered a new patient even only 4 days old so if you would like Dr. George I would recommend setting everything up with them before hand. We see him and we love him!

I'm only 18 weeks so I havne't even really thought about this. I was going to ask my OB at my next appointment if she had any she recommended.

Do Pediatricans actually make appointments to just sit and talk to you before choosing one? I'm so new to this whole process!
