According to the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) you should wait until 6 months to try CIO. That's why most pediatricians don't recommend it until that time. It's pretty normal for babies to want to wake up periodically through the night....
The AAP states that babies younger than than 6mo. are not able to take in enough air while crying for longer periods of time.

My ped recommended it at 4.5 months because DS was taking in naps. I'm kind of glad that I wasn't able to go through with it after reading this :(

Where do they ever say that? Do you have any links to articles or anything on AAP's website?
I don't think this can be true, for the fact that colic babies, who cry no matter what, all day long, never suffer any long term damage from lack of air.

AAP Book
"Many babies cannot fall asleep without crying and will go to sleep more quickly if left to cry for a while. The crying shouldn't last long if the child is truly tired."
"some babies actually need to let off energy by crying in order to settle into sleep or rouse themselves out of it. As much as fifteen to twenty minutes of fussing won't do your child any harm. Just be sure she's not crying out of hunger or pain, or because her diaper is wet."
(Caring for Your Baby, pp 36, 188-189)
sorry again me and my fancy books

Too young. IMO CIO works better when they are a bit older.
