Iowa governor signs controversial law shortening early and Election Day voting

https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/08/politics/kim-reynolds-voting-iowa/index.html

...
The legislation, which passed both Republican-controlled chambers of the state legislature last month, will reduce the number of early voting days from 29 days to 20 days. It will also close polling places an hour earlier on Election Day (at 8 p.m. instead of 9 p.m.).
The bill additionally places new restrictions on absentee voting including banning officials from sending applications without a voter first requesting one and requiring ballots be received by the county before polls close on Election Day.
...

Why make it harder for people to vote? Unless you're trying to rig the system in your favor, of course...

Ridiculous but these things backfired on them last time.

They can try all they want, but people like Stacey Abrahams and others will use their grassroots approach to combat it & increase voter turn out.

Why is it harder? Just like with anything there are due dates and you must comply with it.

How would this make it harder on people? If someone can make it in 29 days, they can also make it in 20 days. That’s still a lots of days, plenty of time. Same thing goes for timing, it’s not like they’re closing polling places at 5pm.

With that said, I think what should be implemented throughout all states is identity verification. As a matter of fact, no one should be walking around without some type of ID.

I also think if someone needs to take some time off from work to go voting, employers should allow that person to do so without any repercussions and without deducting pay. Voting is important and it should not cost u ur job to do so.

Re: Iowa governor signs controversial law shortening early and Election Day voting

According to Republicans and Democrats, we just had the most secure election ever. Reducing days, reducing in-person hours, and adding restrictions is absolutely making it harder. Anything less than what worked before is automatically harder.

Why close polling places an hour early? Why require mail-in ballots before polling closes?

I absolutely agree with that. Many people can't vote because they aren't able to leave their jobs to get to the polls. With an hour less of available time, there will be people who don't get home in time to vote. By eliminating the ability to ask for a mail-in ballot just because you know you can't get there before or after work means you can't vote with the current rules.

SHOULD NOT... doesn't equal WILL NOT.
there are MANY employers who will dock you for taking time off to vote. there are MANY employers who will threaten to fire you if you are not there when they want you there. there are MANY employers who make it hard for the lower ranking employee to do things like vote on election day.

just because we know these are important civic duties does not mean that those who have some kind of power over others feel the same way.

usually those who are affected by these types of employers are the poor and the less educated, those very people that voter suppression works hard to keep out of the voting booths.

With the current setup in most States, it's actually unconstitutional. Right now, for many people in NY, it is impossible to get a gov't issued ID without paying some type of fee. If there is any fee at all required to get an ID, and an ID is required to vote, it's a Poll Tax.

If things change, then it can be discussed, but right now, it's against the 24th Amendment.

Reason why I said what I said above. Why not try to pass into legislation laws that would protect the voter? Voting should be treated as a priority without consequences.

Cutting a few days and 1 hour shouldn’t be the focus. By that logic, there could still be people not able to vote even at 29 days and polls closing at 9pm. Why not then add 20 more days and open polls 24 hrs? Efforts to improve voting should be put somewhere else.

I never said they need to expand days or time. If it worked fine last year, why reduce it? Just leave everything the way it was.

Right but the reason why u have 29 days to vote and keep polls open til 9pm is to help more people to vote. People that have a problem with the measures that Iowa is taking is because they think it’ll make it harder for some to vote. By that logic then, why not add a plethora of days so nobody misses the opportunity of voting? So u see how this is just not sutainable? Why not work towards protecting a voter so that person wouldn’t have to worry about choosing between making the cutoff for voting or losing their job. I bet it’d also help with the huge lines at poll places!

ITA. I would love to see that happen. I think Election Day should be a National Holiday. There should be plenty of things put in place to allow people to vote without affecting their jobs. I've seen very few laws heading in that direction, though.

Something needs to change. Results should be in on election night....they shouldn’t be counting thousands of ballots. I know they never know the “official” results but what went on this year was ridiculous.

In person voting should be a couple days. The absentee ballot thing...don’t agree with. Too many people can request ballots for others (elderly). And I couldn’t stand the amount of people dropping off their ballot....if you are able to physically come down and wait to hand in your ballot you can do it in person.

It's almost as if some people are unaware of the voter suppression problem we have in this country.

I'm also not understanding why anyone thinks election results are suppose to be definitive on election night. Where did anyone get the idea that the election must be decided on one night? It's not how things EVER worked, states have their own voting rules and counting votes takes time.

Lastly, I'll say this until I'm blue in the face, this is the 21st century, the notion that one MUST show up in person to vote is so outdated and archaic. Every American should have the option to vote in whatever manner works best for them whether that be in person, by ballot or otherwise. The easier we make it to vote, the more people that will vote but we all know that's not what politicians want. Insisting that everyone must vote in person is just another form of voter suppression. I hope at some point there is online voting in addition to in person and mail in/drop off ballots. Time to change with the times.

ETA - I totally agree with Golden, Election Day should be a national holiday.

Just look at all the unemployment fraud going on bc you don’t have to file IN PERSON. Until we can get a more secure way, I just can’t get on board with all these other ways of voting. Im all for weeklong in-person voting. Anything more is risky as a voter because a lot can change leading up to Election Day.

And yet, this election was deemed very secure and there still has been NO evidence to date of ANY fraud or wrongdoing.

I personally know people who requested ballots and sent them in for elderly family members. There is no evidence bc you can’t prove it. I bet if you look at track records there were a lot of voters 80 plus who haven’t voted in years and ‘voted’ this election.

I hate when anyone tries to prove their point with anecdotal evidence because it's meaningless. Trump filed over 60 lawsuits and spent MONTHS trying to prove fraud and was continually unsuccessful because there was NO evidence. At some point you have to believe the facts, the facts have repeatedly shown that this was a safe and fair election.

We just can’t believe that 80 million people would have voted for him. When will he be allowed to take questions?

Funny, because MOST people can't understand why anyone would vote for an inept, unqualified, washed up reality star. TWICE no less. Sad.

Who cares? Seriously. Who cares. Trump took questions and look how swimmingly that went. He sounded like a bumbling imbecile every time he spoke so I'm not sure why this is such a big thing for you.

The way I see it, Biden is doing his job. His press secretary holds daily briefings to inform the public. He isn't spending every waking minute on Twitter like a hormone enraged tween and even better, he isn't a media whore. He's not calling people names, ridiculing everyone around him and embarrassing the $hit out of this country. But my favorite part, he's surrounded by a competent and qualified cabinet and they are working hard to get things done.

Him taking or not taking questions is pretty low on my "give a crap" list. He's ten times the president Trump ever was even on his worst day.
