Introduction and question

Hey everyone! I just my BFP on Saturday! Chat Icon I'm really excited to be on this board!

Here's my question: I don't have an OBGYN, so I'm calling around and the doctor I want to see won't see me until I'm 8 weeks. Is that normal? People keep telling me to see someone right away, so I'm a little freaked out by this. What if it's an ectopic pregnancy or something and it ruptures by then?? Am I over-thinking this?

A lot of doctors won't see you until 8 weeks so that is pretty standard. If you are concerned, you can ask them to at least have you come in for bloodwork to confirm. Chat Icon

Re: Introduction and question

Totally normal, with both pregnancies (2 different OB offices) I wasnt seen until 8-10 weeks.

The only people I know of who are taken RIGHT AWAY are those who had been TTC for a long time, or had a history of issues keeping a pregnancy.

Don't overthink it. Just enjoy these early stages!

Congrats!

Congrats! Yes, 8 weeks if the norm, but someone should call in pre natal vitamins for you or else pick them up over the counter!!!

Welcome and congrats!

Like PP said, most women do not go to the OB until 7-8w UNLESS there is cause for concern (previous miscarriage, IF treatment, or some pre-existing medical condition mom has). It is TOTALLY normal to wait that long, but you can always try to ask them to see you earlier.

Re: Introduction and question

I'm in a similar situation.

I found someone that I thought I wanted but they won't see me until 8 weeks and then don't have an appt. for another 2!

I feel like 10 weeks is crazy for me to wait. In fact, I just posted asked for a rec for someone else.

I have definnitely heard the 8 week thing though b/c they're pretty much guaranteed at that point to find a heartbeat if the preg is viable.

I *think* that if you had an ectopic you would experience pain before it got to the point of a rupture- in which case I'm sure the dr. would see you at that time.

Anyway, happy and healthy 9 Chat Icon

Re: Introduction and question

most of the time with an ectopic you'll experience spotting and/or pain... for me it started during week 5...

Yes. I was surprised also. I was seen at 7w and they were able to see the baby but before that sometimes you cannot see anything.

Most OB/GYN's do allow you to come in for a blood test to confirm pregnancy.

Re: Introduction and question

Welcome and congrats. None of them will see you before 8 weeks, unless you have any bleeding or cramping , then call. but otherwise. You will be fine, try not to stress. Its hard, we have all been there.

Re: Introduction and question

8 weeks is standard. At this point you are so early that you would not able to really see anything. The one thing you could do is get bloodwork to confirm...that is what I did. Chat Icon

Re: Introduction and question

Thanks everyone!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I feel better. The woman was really b!tchy on the phone, so I wasn't sure if it was just her. I ended up just calling another doctor anyway, and even though she said the same thing, I felt better because she was nicer. Chat Icon

Re: Introduction and question

Welcome and congrats! I can't help you on the appt I'm in a different state and they saw me at 5w3d. Every place does it different, but 8 weeks seems pretty standard for NY.

Re: Introduction and question

Congratulations!!!!! Call now, they won't usually see you, they mine had me come in a take like 100 vials of blood, but it can take a long time to make a first appt. Even at 8 weeks, I only had a sono and a meeting with the doctor (weight and bp), then I had a sono at 10 weeks and I want have a real exam until next Tuesday at almost 13 weeks.

Re: Introduction and question

CONGRATS! Most doctors wont see you until that point unless you had problems in the past with pregnancy.

If you haven't, I wouldn't worry. If you had any problems, bleeding, severe pain, call the new OB and go in earlier.

Good luck!!!
