Re: can u put oatmeal cereal

My son gets oatmeal in his bottle. I was never told that I couldn't use oatmeal.

Re: can u put oatmeal cereal

i did it once and DS is fine. The docs tell you not to do it b/c it can cause choking. But people have been putting cereal in a bottle for years and still do it with no major problems. My mom did it for me and I came out fine.

Re: can u put oatmeal cereal

I used to put rice in the bottle (1tsp per 2oz). When I put oatmeal in once, I didn't like the color or consistency of the milk.

You give Brianna cereal with a spoon, no? Why do you need to put it in her bottle as well?

Ask your Ped. Some do not recommend this practise.

Re: can u put oatmeal cereal

I don't remember how old your DD is, but why not try the spoon? I think putting it in the bottle just potentially creates a bad habit because then they won't want to take it with a spoon.

I feed DS cereal or avacado with a spoon about an hour-1.5hrs before bed and then top him off by BF'ing him.

I also haven't found that starting solids made him sleep longer. Actually, I think it did the reverse!!!

Re: can u put oatmeal cereal

honestly its too thick..I would be afraid to do that and the whoel point of solids is to use a spoon to teach them to eat.

Cereal doesnt make babies sleep longer.

I would use a spoon if you want to give cereal( oatmeal at night)

Re: can u put oatmeal cereal

We put oatmeal in DDs bottle right before bedtime as well as giving it to her during the day wiith a spoon feed.
I think it definitely helps her to sleep longer. We tried it the past 3 nights and she slept almost 12 hours without waking for food. HTH Good luck.

i agree with this.. i have only heard of adding it to bottles when the formula needed some thickening for reflux or something.. and even then i think it was rice. Chat Icon

No, you are right. Most doctors do not recommend cereal in the bottles any more unless for reflux or another reason.

My Dr. doesn't advise putting cereal in the bottles unless the baby has reflux issues. There is a risk of the baby choking if the cereal is in the bottle. Also, certain studies have suggested that giving cereal too early increases the risk of celiac disease.

4-6 months is the suggested age.

I am sure there are exceptions...
