Intro and advice
Hi Ladies,
I recently began posting on TTC but just got a call from my dr with some not-so-good-news so here I am looking for some insight.
DH and I are TTC. In April I had to get a CT scan for kidney stones. They said they saw a cyst on my ovaries so I should see my dr. Meantime, I decided to use OPKs for my May cycle and I never got a +.
I saw my dr last week and she ran a CD 22 progesterone test. She just called to tell me that my level is only 5.5 - and she'd prefer to see it at 10 or more. So she thinks I'm ovulating but probably will have a hard time getting pregnant w/o any help. She is sending me an Rx for Clomid to start after my husband gets semen analysis done.
I don't really know what questions to ask you ladies, but any advice/insight would be great. Is 5.5 really low? What exactly does Clomid do?
Also, she said if I do get pregnant I should come in right away for testing b/c my progesterone might not be high enough to maintain a pregnancy...that's what scares me the most!
I'm at work so I'm kinda processing this all, but I'm not sure.
TIA!

Re: Intro and advice
in my opinion, i would see an re...is this a reg gyno? if in fact you do have some issues.... repro specialists moniter you much much more and look into things deeper so you dont end up wasting yoru time.
i would NOT TAKE clomid without understnding more of what is going on...clomid can help you ovulate or make more eggs but without monitering you can overstimulate etc and if you do have low prog.... i wouldnt wait until you get pg cause you may need supplementation right after you ovulate to maintain a preg..
i really hope some of the other girls can help.! xoxo

Re: Intro and advice
I would go straight to an RE too.
ETA - I don't know anything about your condition, but IMO gynos are not nearly as in depth as an RE.

Re: Intro and advice
Welcome!
ITA! I would not take medication unless you understand what it does to your body and can be monitored while on it.
Clomid isn't always the best bet for patients but usually is the 1st choice by dr.s an REs. For example, it's not beneficial for women with uterine lining issues. If you do go to an RE they will address the cyst on your ovary as well as the low progesterone issue. Most of all you want a Dr. to be proactive and preventative especially when it concerns pregnancy.
For now, I would just take some notes while using your OPK's and monitor any changes.
Good Luck!

Is 5.5 too low to get pregnant naturally? Or to keep a pregnancy?

its my understanding that drs dont like to see anything below 10 for a sustainable pregnancy...

Re: Intro and advice
Sorry for so many questions. So it sounds like even if the Clomid helps me ovulate, having low progesterone might mean I'd miscarry?
AF is due today but I haven't gotten it yet. My dr said if she isn't here by Tuesday I should go in to see her. Now I'm worried I shouldn't wait until Tuesday.

you could always test on your own too. low progesterone is pretty common and can usually be treated easily with progesterone suppositories. it's great that your dr caught it because you may have had trouble keeping a pregnancy otherwise.
i agree with OP that you should seek out an RE, they specialize in getting you pregnant and can run all the necessary tests to find out what's going on and get you your
good luck!

i have to disagree on this one. I think for CD 22 ,prog of 5.5 is not low at all. We all know that anything over 1 is pretty much indicating ovulation. Drs do like to see over 10, but at 7dpo! If she ovulated on CD20, 5.5 2 days later is a great number!
I would see RE. GL!

Re: Intro and advice
I was most likely 9 DPO. So 5.5 is low.
AF just arrived so I'll be going in Friday for my FSH bloodwork.

Re: Intro and advice
I really believe that while an OBGYN might know there stuff there is NOTHING like an RE reviewing your entire situation before starting you on something like clomid. While Clomid does work for a lot of people, it can thin your lining and there are studies out now that Clomid might have possible side effects down the line. I do know that regular OB's tend to give Clomid to anyone who is having trouble. You should be carefully monitored while on it. I would wait for your bloodwork and then take copies of everything to an RE even if its just for a second opinion. I had low progesterone with my last pregnancy and lost it and now with this one I am on progesterone supps and my prog has been over 90 so far. Good Luck!
