Internet Censorship Legistlation...
Has anyone else heard about this??
I'm not very familiar but when I logged into Mozilla today I noticed this tab.
Link
As drafted, the legislation would grant the government and private parties unprecedented power to interfere with the Internet's domain name system (DNS). The government would be able to force ISPs and search engines to redirect or dump users' attempts to reach certain websites' URLs. In response, third parties will woo average users to alternative servers that offer access to the entire Internet (not just the newly censored U.S. version), which will create new computer security vulnerabilities as the reliability and universality of the DNS evaporates.
There's more info if you click the red "Take Action Now" button.
I have to admit, from what I've read, I'm not a fan of this legislation, but maybe I'm missing something .

Ok. But rather than running from the problem, it might benefit us to fight it, no?

There's several links in that thread.
From what I've read, it looks like there is enough ambiguity and room for interpretation in the bill, that if one person is doing something nefarious on Facebook, the person who owns the intellectual property that is being stolen (song, book, art, and may extend to snippets of their work as well) can order all of Facebook to be shut down.

It's a terrifying piece of legislation, IMO.
I said enough in the thread I started yesterday about it.
From my understanding, it also doesn't even have to be PROVEN that the copyright is being infringed upon, just CLAIMED

Thank you for posting that thread. I *thought* I saw something on it yesterday but when I went to look for it, I couldn't find the thread to post on so I thought maybe it was on a different message board that I saw it.

tarabelle, I apologize for not just bumping your thread, as I said, I thought I saw it, but couldn't find it.
I agree the legislation seems very broad and could really be used to shut down just about ANY website at any given time.
I'm pretty surprised we haven't heard more about this on the news or even facebook for that matter.

That's one part I find surprising too. It seems like this was sleeper legislation snuck in somewhere. HOW has this evaded publicity!!?!?!?!
No worries about not bumping the thread. The more the message is out the better.
Everyone needs to send an email to their congresspeople to stop this from becoming law!

I posted it on my facebook page in hopes of spreading the word.
In addition, I too, sent a letter/email to my local politicians - I did it through the link I provided. Easy peasy
