Re: Interesting article: What to reject when you're expecting
I do agree with a lot of this article, especially with doctors thinking they should take the baby out early. They figured my son was so big that they'd just take him out earlier than planned. He was born at 38 weeks and was put into the NICU for breathing problems. It's one of the many reasons I switched doctors for this pregnancy.

Re: Interesting article: What to reject when you're expecting
I'm happy that the medical community is noticing that c/s after a c/s is not neccessary. I had one with DD because she was breech and everyone (not my Dr) kept telling me that I was going to HAVE TO have another. I don't want another. Luckily my Dr. is all about a VBAC. But I'm glad it's catching on.

It was actually huge in the 90's, and then kind of died off b/c of insurance companies. I'm going for a VBAC with this baby too, and people look at me like I have three heads when I tell them I'm not "just scheduling it" this time.

I guess that's why so many people have that mentality.
Friends and family think I'm nuts for not only going for the VBAC but not bother with the epidural b/c the anestethics are what caused my complications last time. I'm not taking any chances.

Just watched Business of Being Born, awesome documentary about how society perceives birth. So glad I watched it & my dh too. Hoping for a unmediated birth.

You girls are very brave, I wish I could be more like you. They gave me an option of VBAC but I declined, going for another elective C/S . The first one was the worst experience of my life and never thought I'd go for another C/S but I'm even more terrified of VB . So another C/S it will be for me

Re: Interesting article: What to reject when you're expecting
This article was very interesting and I think informative for a lot of people. At least in my area "inductions" are definitely recommended WAY to often and early and lead to more C-sections and increased risks to baby. Everyone is uncomfortable at the end but allowing baby to come when they are ready is usually the best way to go. Obviously inductions can be great for those who necessitate them due to a medical issue but convenience for the doctor/parent or general discomfort is not one of them.

Yup, and they have it for rent or buy on iTunes too. They also have More business of Being Born too, which is a series. One of them is about VBACS :)
Would love to hear what others think of it too.

LOVED that article - thanks.
Like a PP - I'm really hoping for an un-medicated birth and I'm not so much worried about the pain, but that fact that I may have to "fight" for it.

Have you maybe thought about a Doula? They can be pretty $$$ but I know a lot of times training doulas can be a lot less if not free. The whole reason the show up to your birth is to support your wishes, and help you get the birth you want. There are a lot on Long Island :)
check out doula.com for lots more info

I have.
I don't think it's for me. I'd rather have the birth experience be about me, my DH and our child. I don't want another person in the mix....
Luckily, my DH is very supportive and I think he'll be a good advocate. Plus, I'll be my own advocate as well.

I watched this docu a few months ago and was interested to see that the OB from the hospital I'm delivering at (Roosevelt) is featured. I like that they try not to rush women into a labor schedule and that the C section rate is low. However, I don't think I could do a home birth..my best friend had her baby at home and she had complications. I am all for an as-unmedicated labor as I can tolerate, but am not against intervention if it is needed. My biggest fear is having drugs first speed up, then slow down labor and then having to get a C section, which seems common.
My mom said she was completely unconscious for her labors (in the 70s) which blows my mind. She doesn't remember a thing.

I don't think we're *that* brave. I look at it like this: I've already taken on everything I was scared of. Needles, scalpels, staples, epidurals, pitocin, surgery, doctors, hospitals... I've faced it all and it didn't break me. A VBAC with an experienced practitioner in a great hospital (Stony Brook) doesn't frighten me at all.

You might be a little busy to truly advocate for yourself. During contractions I'd kind of fade out. Do you have a mom/MIL/sister/friend that you'd consider having there? Sometimes just having another woman in the room helps. Are you using a midwife or a supportive OB? Definitely take a Bradley class; the one I went to was amazing.
