I think it is but how it is covered is determined by your specific plan. I have the empire uhc plan and I am 100% covered as long as I go through one of their providers (edgepark, byram, and one other I forgot the name of). Each provider has different eligible pumps. I was warned by insurance that the pump will not be covered if it is delivered before I give birth.

If you work for nyc, those plans are grandfathered and pumps are not covered

This depends on your insurance! My insurance covered pumps ordered/delivered 30 days before your due date. Mine arrived 2 weeks before DD was born and was fully covered.

I have United Healthcare and Edgepark told me to call them 30 days before due date and they would send it within a few days. 100% coverage.

My understanding is its mandated (with the exception of grandfathered in) but in talking with friends we have discovered each insurance company's way of handling is a little bit different. For me I had get a prescription for the pump from my OB, then contact the supplier that my insurance company uses. I could do this any time after 27 weeks. I contacted them last Monday, they gave me a choice between 2 pumps, I decided which one I wanted (Medela PISA), they placed the order and it was on my doorstep when I got home from work on Friday. Completely 100% covered and the process was pretty simple and super fast. I would call your specific insurance for more details.

Re: insurance covering pumps

all great info! thanks ladies...

I called my current insurance company and they do cover it. unfortunatley my insurance is changing as of 5/1, but i have been told the plan is exactly the same, so hopefully the new carrier will cover it as well!

Maybe a stupid question. But does the pump come with a bag and the stuff you need? Or do you have to purchase that separately?

It depends. Some pumps that I could choose from included the tote, some didn't. They come with at least the basic stuff you need - flanges, tubes, bottles, adapter.

When I look up the pump I got, it looks like it comes with a bag, storage bottles, bottle holders, flanges, tubes, ac adapter, storage bags. Through the insurance, it didn't come with the bag, storage bags, or bottle holders.
