insulin for GD
OB told me today that they want to put me on three insulin shots daily to control my blood sugar since the diet doesn't seem to be doing it. I'm extremely frustrated and disappointed because I've been following the stupid diet (which is so restrictive it's ridiculous!)religiously & testing my blood four times a day. It has been incredibly inconvenient and difficult.
Also, I have major needle anxiety. The finger pricks don't bother me because there is no needle involved and the blood is no big deal, but piercing my skin with a needle makes me want to vomit. And I just might. Every time.
I need to find a way to deal with this mentally so it doesn't become debilitating in my last few weeks. Usually when I go for blood work, I just don't look at the needle, I talk to the nurse, and I'm fine. That is not an option now, obviously. DH can give me the shots in the morning & afternoon, but I will have to do it at lunch.
Any suggestions on how to deal with this better?

Re: insulin for GD
The needles I use are so small it doesn't hurt at all. I am so used to it now that it isn't a big deal at all. Just say to yourself this is for the baby, this is for the baby, this is for the baby. My friend used to have her DH do it for her so that could be an option too.

Re: insulin for GD
Thanks for your support. It's not the pain I'm concerned about, it's actually shoving a needle into my body that freaks me out. I sound like a baby, I know, but I have major anxiety that I have little control over. DH is coming to the appointment with me so he can do it in the morning & at night, but school is over this week, I'll be home by myself, so I'll have to do it at lunch. I can't even look at needles on tv!

Re: insulin for GD
you know I totally feel for you, I think I would be panicked about it myself but honestly.. I think after the first time your gonna get used to it.. I guess the best way to handle it is to do it as quickly as possible without even thinking about it. You close with any of your neighboors? If you really just cant do it, could u go to the doctors everyday? I know that seems crazy but Im just brainstorming..

Re: insulin for GD
Just wanted to give you
I had gd too, it was diet controlled so I didn't need insulin. But I felt the same way about having to prick my finger 4x a day. I have fainted at the sight of blood my whole life. You will get used to it- you have to. I promise it will be ok

i had DH give me the shots (and i had to turn away when he did them ). i had to take the insulin initially only in the morning and then at night as well. i was dreading the day my dr. would tell me i would have to do it in the afternoon, because like you i was a complete chicken. luckily, i never had to, but there were a few times DH was not around and i did have to do them myself - honestly, it's really not bad AT ALL.
i feel your pain but you'll be fine!
