Re: GD and insulin

You will probably have to discuss that with your doctor. Either your OB or an endocrinologist will determine how high they will let your blood sugar get before needing insulin, and they will have to set up a scale for you to tell you how much to use based on what your sugar level is. Hope you don't get to that point. Chat Icon

i just had my appt yesterday to review my levels. my doc said right now it doesnt appear that i need insulin. my highest number so far has been 150. for the most part, my numbers are within the limits, except for after lunch and sometimes fasting. he said if the fasting continues to be high, then we will look into meds. when do you test? i test when i wake up and 2 hrs after the start breakfast, lunch and dinner.

please feel free to fm me anytime. this is not an easy thing to get thru and i know i need all the help i can get!Chat Icon

what are your numbers?

i started insulin (5 units overnight) after the first couple weeks of monitoring. my fasting numbers were hovering just around 95. i was irritated because the device i am using (freestyle flash) provides erratic numbers and has a tolerance of 10-15% margin of error. i found myself to be too borderline to start such aggressive therapy, but my dr. was pushing it.

now i have switched to 8 units overnight and 5 in the morning because my after breakfast and after dinner numbers are slowly creeping up. again, not drastically, below 120 with a spike over two or three times in 2 weeks Chat Icon .

HTH - every dr. is different, curious to see what yours deems is necessary.

i'm in jersey and see both a nutritionist and endocrinologist. i self monitor daily with the freestyle flash device and fax my numbers to the dr. on a weekly basis.

Re: GD and insulin

My Dr. and the Dr. at Madonna told me as long as I my levels do not get over 120 twice a day, then I do not have to go on insulin.
Hope that helps.

i do it 5x a day, fasting, every 3 hours (1 hour after each meal), and one more before bedtime.

my doc gave me these target numbers

fasting < 90
1 hour after meal < 140

my fasting numbers average at 75.

and then the other numbers are all over the place depending on what i eat.. usually they are either in the 80-90s or 120-140.

my highest was 166 when i went overboard with one meal. Chat Icon

does it look like i'll need insulin even though for the most part i'm staying below the target levels?

you don't sound like an insulin candidate. I know my dr had told me spiking here and there was not an big deal and was fine seeing that - it had to be more consistent spikin to worry. When I had GD, I only spiked a couple times. Actually I had it so low at first my dr ordered me a big meal and said I don't care if you spike! (I was very stressed and depressed over the whole GD thing and he knew that). I never once needed the insulin in my pregnancy.
