I'm taking a snow day
Just don't feel safe commuting into the city and then trying to get back home later. I don't want DH to have to drive to the station to pick me up. I don't mind the weather, my biggest fear is falling. With 2 knee replacements, I can do some serious damage, and my cane doesn't work well in slick conditions,
My office is officially open. It would not be the end of the world for them to close for the day to keep everyone safe.
I'm having a cup of coffee, watching the news, watching the snow fall heavily.

Good for you! My DH left at 4am to take the train into Jamaica, he works for the LIRR. They are deciding what they will be doing and when to leave. Only a few went in. They stop service at 9 inches so hopefully he’s heading home soon

I am too. I made it half way to station and my car got stuck. Not worth it. Turned around and went back home.

Dont risk it. My SIL fell in her work parking lot the last time she got snow and broke her ankle. She is now out of work for the next few months. Thankfully Dh and I can work from home. If not then I would be calling out.

I'm taking a day off because I'm sick. Went to the doctor yesterday mid-day and feel like crap. Even if it wasn't snowing, I would have had to call out.

What kills me is hoe companies don't close in conditions like this. It's more important to make everyone risk their lives schlepping in? For what? Unless you are an essential service. No regard for employees and their well being. Just the almighty dollar. Welcome to America. Worst in the industrialized world with maternity leave too. Typical

Ugh, seriously. I'm coming in from Nassau and surprisingly my commute in was fine, though there was already a good 3/4 inches on the ground and it was still coming down steadily. Of course, I'm the only @sshole in my department here. I would normally take off, but I have a vacation day tomorrow and DH is home today. I'm just worried about getting home tonight, if they even talk about shutting down the LIRR, I'm out. Maaaaaaaybe they'll let us leave early, but probably not. It's not so bad in the city, so they don't really care.

I have to work from home though I wish we got snow days lol. But since everyone has the ability to work from home that is what is expected when the office is closed. If someone for some reason could not work from home they were told to stay home anyway

Same. They closed our office but it's business as usual. I never really get a true snow day where I can do my own thing. But that's fine.... as long as I don't have to drive in it.

But the 'schlep' for some is not as bad as for others and that's what most companies take into consideration when deciding to stay open or not. If all people who live in the city or BK have to do to get to work is walk a few blocks to the subway and then take a train, then that's a LOT easier than having to drive to the LIRR, risk getting your car plowed in at the station, risk having the LIRR break down etc. So, i understand why many companies in the city stay open, but caution employees to stay home if need be.
My company probably has 85% of its employees that live in the city or BK, so we're open. Those of us that don't live there, are working from home or took a day. I get it.. The only real reason we ever shut down is if the city declares a state of emergency or if the subways are truly going to be affected. But we're encouraged to stay safe and only travel if we want to.. there's no pressure at all to come in from anyone.

Re: I'm taking a snow day
Now I'm really getting effing pissed off. NYC has declared a state of emergency and yet I'm still here at work. It doesn't seem like they plan to close early and I'm fuming. If I leave early, because I'm afraid LIRR will shut down, they'll take it from my personal time. And that's such bullsh!t- for that I should've just taken the day.

Ughhhh that sucks. And is a testament to how the company treats their employees. It's a State of Emergency. You made it in and did your best to get there- that should count for something. They can't spot you the 5 hours so you can leave and get home before the LIRR shuts down? Those few hours are REALLY going to make a difference to them? That is what I mean. It's insane.

Seriously, they let us wear jeans today so we should shut up and be grateful. I work in a law firm, no attorneys are here, maybe 5 of the 300. All the support staff is here and worrying about getting home.

This is exactly how my job is. 100% of the employees drive in. All of the VP’s are “working from home” but anyone under them is expected to be in, even if we have to keep ability to do most of our jobs from hime. And believe me...we are not a company that is saving lives whatsoever.

That is shittyy. I would feel awful working from home but making my staff drive in. Awful. If you are going to make them come in, then YOU should come in too. Such a disregard for employee's safety and well being.

My comapny used to do that. You can wear jeans. So when you die in this horrible weather, you’re comfortable. I don’t get it. I’m off but my company is closed. I would not have gone in anyway. It sucks but id leave now

WOW that's terrible. What a complete lack of respect they're showing. When I worked I'm an office all the bosses (they were the owners) always came in. They expected you to do the same. A little easier when they showed up.

Re: I'm taking a snow day
I can't really work from home, most senior management will work from home. I don't get the recognition for coming into the office in bad weather, so that was a big reason for me to stay home. Now that a state of emergency was declared, I am going to fight to get paid without using PTO.

Our office closed today - they follow NYC schools (even though we aren't in education).
If you can work remotely, you are expected to work but, if you can't work remotely you get a free day off....

In my opinion if it’s a state of emergency, by law you should have the day off paid since you technically shouldn’t be driving, if you are a non essential employee. I work in health care / for an OPWDD setting so I totally get it, I’m not essential and we have to use our own time it’s crazy! Luckily Thursdays are my day off!

Yeah it really sucks for MTA, healthcare, first responsders. But these corporations that people were talking about on the other thread- who make their employees come in and the higher ups work from home- that is ridiculous on a day like this. Like how productive was anyone, really?
