Re: Im meeting with EI next week
They expoalin the EI process.....seems a bit complicated but it really isn't. I guess it's a formailty. I think they need a copy of my insurance card, and maybe DS's SS card and birth certiciate. Then they give you a bunch of agencies to contact for the evaluation. The evaluators come to your house and give feedback....usually you have an idea right there whether or not your child will qualify for services (DS didn't) THen the coordinator calls you to tell you the actual results - that's as far as we got. Re: Im meeting with EI next week
It's scarier than it is.
It's really to make you sign paperwork. They should mail it to you first so you are ready. If they don't, don't worry. It's very easy. You will need to know DS birth weight, his SS, your school district and explain why you are calling them. They will explain the process. Don't hesitate to ask questions. You don't need to do much. Just know your DS well so you can easily answer the questions. This is NOT an evaluation. After your initial meeting, the evaluators will call you (they did for me and I am in Nassau) to schedule a time to come. It has to be done in Nassau in 45 days so you can't really postponne the evaluations. All the reports from the evaluator(s) need to be submitted about 1 week before your next meeting. Which will be about 1 month or so (depending on the issue(s) after your 1st meeting. The service coordinator of that 1st meeting will most likely schedule the 2nd meeting with the reports, and discuss whether your child qualifies or not and what services he will get at that 1st meeting also.

I found the process fast though. The EI coordinator came and we did the paperwork , then the agency contacted me the next day to set up appointments. We had two And both were done within 2 weeks. Noah was qualified for Speech. We have a "meeting" on the 21st to assign him times and a therapist. It all was fairly fast. 3 weeks about.

Thanks Donna, that is good to know. I thought it would take months or something. I just hate seeing him get frustrated and cry when he wants something and Im unsure of what it is.

Re: Im meeting with EI next week
Everyone elses experiences were the same with me as well.
The coordinator comes, there is paperwork to fill out, she/he explains the process. You have to pick an agency to do the evailuation, then they make an appt to come and actually do the eval. The process was very quick for us. After the eval by the agency, you will know if your DC qualifies.
GOOD LUCK!!
