Re: Illegal apartment rentals.

Normally I'd look the other way unless it became an issue.

If it's an issue, I would speak to an attorney OR I would send certified letters to the town stating that there are illegal apartments & that the town should take action.

Then I'd be following up with certified letters stating that the town, the town board & the town attorney is aware they are illegal & continue to not enforce the law.

Next I'd threaten to sue the town for not enforcing the law & the town code.

DH & I lived in a basement apt right after we got married...we were saving for a house. Our land lords were the type of neighbors that you WANT living on your block...none of us caused trouble. We all had good careers, looked out for the neighborhood, didn't take other peoples parking spots on the street (even though you don't own the street Chat Icon ).

I agree that people shouldn't think they are above the law, however not all laws are created equally...since there seems to be a good amount of basement apts on LI, maybe the laws should be changed...make sure they are safe & then make them legal...

I would never report a neighbor for something like this if I wasn't somehow DIRECTLY affected in a negative way by the situation.

You could really be messing with people's livelihoods - what if the apartment helps pay their mortgage?

But its illegal.

You shouldn't have to overlook illegal activity because it helps pay someone's mortgage.

It annoys me more that people think laws don't apply to them, than people having apartments in their homes.

We're not talking about a LEGAL apartment - its ILLEGAL.

eta: illegal apartments mess with everyone elses livelihood Chat Icon

So do foreclosures.

In this market worst case scenario the foreclosures would be picked up by the investors. It is not as bad as you think.

For the family whose home is foreclosed, it is.

That doesn't make you above the law.

You're absolutely right. It doesn't bother me as long as there is no illegal activity going on. A house on my block was being rented out and they were definitely dealing drugs. They ended up moving out in the middle of the night. I guess because of that situation I dont care if an apt is legal or illegal as long as there are no dirtbags living there.

I don't really know how someone even knows if it is legal or illegal?

Re: Illegal apartment rentals.

I wouldn't be able to confirm its illegal just because of a number of cars. I wouldn't want to start anything I wasn't completely sure of. Also they could very well be legal or just have extra family living with them.

Growing up we had 5 cars and a truck in our driveway and sometimes we parked on the street in front of our home and if we had friends come over there would be more cars.

I tend to lean this way too. So many people are priced out of LI. Maybe it would be a better place to live if everyone was like your LL.

And what about all the mother daughter apartments? I see so many people in this situation and it's actually a positive.

Illegal apartment rentals.

Not taking either side, illegal or legal, but just putting it out there....

my brother works in a SD with declining enrollment. Some of the students in the district left b/c their houses were in foreclosure, short sale etc. Many of the families live in apartments or houses that are rented, too.
Because of declining enrollment, he is being reduced to half time/half pay next year. If this type of thing keeps happening across the board, he won't be able to afford to live on LI. One of two things will happen: he will leave LI or never buy a house, leading to less taxes for the SD, etc.

The balance is off somewhere, and people can't afford to live on LI any more.

I understand being frustrated.

But do you want to be the neighborhood pariah? You could really be messing with people's livelihoods - what if the apartment helps pay their mortgage? If town officials are aware, I'd leave it be.

I'm just not in the boat that would want to mess with people's homes just because I could.

Ita. It honestly doesn't bother me. If there's an issue I would approach the landlords nicely but I'd never rat on them.

In my town, all apartments are illegal, unless it's a family member.

And yes, it is my business, because if the town were doing what they should be doing, then they could either be collecting more tax dollars by making apartments legal. Which would in turn help my school district which is CONSTANTLY making cuts. Or they could be, pontentially, getting rid of bad seeds in the neighborhood. I'm not saying every illegal apartment rental is bad. But the neighborhood would definitely be better without them. Especially the volume that we have here.

So yes, I have a right to make it my business.

In brookhaven you can search online for rental permits.

I live near stony brook and it's becoming a huge problem.

Doesn't this have to do with them renting out houses to tons of college students? I thought I read an article about this.....

This was my thought as well.

I know lots of families where the grandparents and even some adult children all live together. I see nothing wrong with it.

And these are all hard working, tax paying citizens so I kind of feel the OP needs to get off her high horse.

Generally you can tell if the situation is a family or not. I have both in my neighborhood. The OP said for various reasons not just the parking.

And to say get off her high horse is a bit much. You could say that about a lot of posts on here.

Thanks for sharing this.

This is definitely the heart of the problem.

LI is getting way too expensive, even for a 1950s tiny house that needs total upgrades and a 2 income household.

Also 1 bedroom apartments frequently cost more than what the average person brings home a month.

We actually considered moving in with my parents to save financially. My parents have a huge home over acre property, same school district. As much as I want to do it I just can't live with them even if we have seperate spaces within the home. Just showing how people will actually consider this to save living on long island.

on my block we have a lot of mother daughter houses. also we have legal 2 families which is what I lived in.

no parking on the block is an issue sometimes. the one neighbor would rent out every part of his house. basement, 2nd floor and rooms. in the past year since he passed his relatives took on the property and now we have much better people living in the house. used to have fights on the front lawn during early morning hours. would like to report the one neighbor on the block, but we have to live next to them so we try to stay out of their business. but all the neighbors do not like him and as soon as he gets out of control the cops are called.
