Ignorant non-Christain here... (Lent question)

Why do some people abstain from eating meat on Fridays and other days during Lent?

Re: Ignorant non-Christain here... (Lent question)

We are supposed to give up for Christ as he gave up for us ...

There is a lot that goes into it and the laws have changed over the years .. some used to fast from meat every Friday throuhout the year, some fasted Wednesday's & Friday's during lent. Wednesday was the 4th day of the week and the day Judas betrayed Jesus.

A lot of people believe that the fasting that we do today is not fasting at all. Giving up meat meant you were supposed to give up something expensive and rich and instead were supposed to eat light ... but instead many catholics order pizza out ($15+ per pie) or make fish (lots of $$$) ...

It symbolizes when Christ fasted for 40 days in the Desert. It begins 40 days prior to Easter - Ash Wednesday. It is considered a time of penance and repenting and that is why we also abstain from something that we enjoy (food, drink, etc.)

good question. You will get five-six different answers and not too many people even know the real reasons behind it.

My DH and my MIL dont eat meat on Fridays in Lent and have NO IDEA why.

Re: Ignorant non-Christain here... (Lent question)

I once heard from a historical perspective that at the time when this tradition was started, that local fishermen went to the Pope about this and it then became common practice, in turn boosting their business. That may be a loose translation of what I heard and by no means do I say this is true. Who knows.

Re: Ignorant non-Christain here... (Lent question)

Before Jesus was crucified, he spent 40 days and nights in the fasting in the desert. Catholics are supposed to fast between meals on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and abstain from eating meat on those days, as well as the rest of the Fridays during lent as a sacrifice in appreciation for what Jesus did for us.

Re: Ignorant non-Christain here... (Lent question)

This is more of a catholic "tradition" rather than a "christian" one-

As far as I know- Most other denominations of christianity do not fast on Fridays!

I do not find this to be an ignorant question at all... the bible does not say "thou shalt not eat meat on Fridays"~ but I do see where the catholics give the symbolism

I'm Episcopalian and we also do the no meat on Fridays (my dad even observes this on Wed). We're basically Catholics who don't recognize the pope, pray to saints or Virgin Mary.

On another note, I know some people who are Baptists and United Methodists and they fast for lent from sun up to sun down.

Hence the word mostChat Icon

My point is not a "christian" tradition- it more of something set by the denominations itself!

I've heard this too...hence, my DH doesn't adhere to the no meat on Friday's rule...I do though...I grew up going to church with my grandmother, and I follow what we always did, no meat on Fridays.

My FIL is SUPER observant during this time - he refrains from eating meat and chicken for 40 days, PLUS he fasts on holy days.

Now THAT'S dedication.

I don't know if this is true or not, but, it would not surprise me. As a matter of fact, a favorite priest of mine ALWAYS ate meat on Fridays during lent. He said it was an absolutely ridiculous rule and didn't make any sense. He was quite certain, as I am, that God isn't sitting up in Heaven making marks in a book next to your name if you ate meat on Friday. Lent is about so much more than that.

Re: Ignorant non-Christain here... (Lent question)

There are MANY stories of how it was started by the church in order to let the livestock grow and fatten during a time as well.

Fasting is one thing that yes is a tradition.

The Friday = No meat was created by the Church not bible based.

My rehersal dinner fell on a Friday during Lent and all my super religious relatives from Ireland ordered meat...as did my relatives from Texas (who said no one they know abstains from meat there) and the priest....so I suppose not eating meat is more of a personal decision
