If your toddler isn't on cow's milk - what do they drink?
Almond? Rice? A little nervous about soy...
Update: We have an appt with a pediatric allergist Tuesday afternoon. Even though I really don't want to, I think I'm going to keep giving him what I am giving him (whole cow's milk) until then, so allergist can see what's going on. Hopefully we will get some answers and direction to continue!
Thanks!

We would've done almond - DH was worried about soy. Did Jordan have a hard time with milk? I thought you already transitioned him.

My DS loves almond milk, unsweetened.

My nephew drinks goat milk and loves it. He has a million allergies and hates food. Somehow he's living off it.

DS drinks goat milk (and not ultra- pasteurized). He doesn't have any allergies, I just believe that goat milk is better for him.

Marci - we've been transitioning him pretty much for over three weeks but I still feel like he has a sensitivity - horrible constipated - was getting these tiny facial rashes, although that seems to have lessened. Spoke to ped tonight, he said soy - I told him I had concerns.
I've been reading the nutritional info though for almond and for rice milk and I'm concerned. They are both so low in fat and in nutrients, I'm worried that DS isn't going to get what he is supposed to get - fat-wise, vitamins, calories, etc. He's not the best eater so it's not like he's making up for it in food.
I just don't know what to do at this point.

Have you tried lactaid? Maybe it's not milk protein after all, but lactose. Worth a shot. Also, someone suggested coconut milk - I think that has more fat. Another thing to try is toddler formula - at least for a couple of months - this might be a good option if he did well on regular formula and could give him a few more months for his digestive system to mature some more. I have some Enfagrow coupons if you want to try it. If he were a better eater, I'd say make sure he eats avocados, olive oil, nut butters, omega-3 eggs, and give him a vitamin, but if he's not eating well, I would worry too.
The other option is to give him a few more weeks on milk maybe with a little prune juice - he may just need more time. We transitioned Lucy over a few months because we had stockpile of formula and she def had poop issues for awhile and is fine now.

Michal, how about coconut milk? I use coconut milk in a lot of Sienna's food and she likes it. I agree that soy is not a good option and I think coconut milk has more fat and nutrients for our skinny babies.

Re: If your toddler isn't on cow's milk - what do they drink?
Haven't tried lactaid but I don't think he's lactose intolerant - classic signs of that would be diarrhea and he is severely constipated. All I know is I'm driving myself crazy at this point - for every "good" thing I read about a milk substitute online, I read something bad about it too in terms of nutritionally for babies and toddlers. Looks like coconut milk has a lot of fat in it but not that much else nutritionally.
Jordan likes hummus which is fattening to I give him a lot of that. I have to buy more milk or something tomorrow and I don't even know what to get!
At this point, I think that I want to see a pediatric allergist. Ped told me on the phone it was not necessary - Mich - it was Reiss - Marcus in on vacation as usual and then asked me if I wanted a rec - I said no because he made me feel like I was second guessing him if I said yes - stupid, I know. But, as I said, I do think I want to see one now because if he is saying to take Jordan off of cow's milk, I would think he would at least tell me definitively which is the best substitute nutritionally. What's weird is that when he weaned from Elecare onto Similac Sensitive, he did just fine - no side effects at all - at SS is a cow's milk protein based formula
Marci - Enfagrow did pop in my head...
ETA - I asked the ped if the constipation lessens as babies get used to the milk - his opinion was that it didn't though...that if milk constipated the baby, that's how it was going to be for them.

Let me know if you want the coupons - I have no use for them so if you want to try this out, just let me know and I'll drop them in the mail for you.
I hope you find something you feel good about soon. Def might be worthwhile to talk to a specialist - your GI might have some thoughts too.

I was going to say the same about coconut milk. It's rich in medium chain fatty acids (that's what the carton says ). I prefer the unsweetened.
Sorry, I just read your post about the coconut milk. I plan on doing coconut milk and carrot juice (carrot, celery & either beets or cucumber) when DS starts weaning. I refuse to give cow's milk and soy (DS is allergic to both anyways), and he's allergic to almond too. I'll probably add some ground sesame seeds to his food/smoothies/carrot juice because it's the highest form of calcium on the planet.

Got some recs. for ped allerrgist so I'm going to make appt. Think I'm going to try goat milk. Anyone know if they make it organic - or do they not need to because it's made differently?

Re: If your toddler isn't on cow's milk - what do they drink?
Be careful w/ Goat milk. Kids w/ milk protein allergy have an allergy to the protein in the goat milk most of the time also. Coconut milk would be my choice. My dd love the coconut milk yogurt, and I use it when cooking for her. The rice milk wouldn't work for us b/c we have constipation issues already w/ her, and the almond makes me nervous b/c of nut allergies in the family.

I am allergic to Casein(protien in milk) when I was a teen and I went to a nutritionist, they put me on Goat's milk. According to them it was the best choice.

ETA - I asked the ped if the constipation lessens as babies get used to the milk - his opinion was that it didn't though...that if milk constipated the baby, that's how it was going to be for them.
This was DS to a "T"!! He became SEVERLY constipated when put on whole milk (fresh mozzerrella does it to him too) and the Lactiad solved it within a week or so!

Interesting! Both the his GI and ped said signs of lactose intolerance would be diarrhea but like I said, complete opposite. But, since he is/was getting the rashes too, I don't know what it is. GI said intolerance would be digestive, not immune (rashes.)

We tried the soy and DD liked the vanilla soy the best. Eventually we tranitioned back to whole cow's milk.
