If your toddler doesn't nap..
How many hours does he/she sleep overnight?
DD is 2.9 years old and sleeping between 10-11 hours overnight (she stopped napping at 2.2). I just saw a chart that says toddlers her age should get 12-14 total hours (overnight + nap) so I'm wondering if I need to try to get her to sleep more.

Each kid will be different. My DS sleeps from 9-6am. Sometimes a nap but sometimes not.

Re: If your toddler doesn't nap..
My dd is 3 but gave up naps right after she turned 2. She sleeps 8:00/8:30-7:00. I know she needs more sleep. She get so cranky and overly emotional. If she happens to fall asleep in the car she is way better but I can't get her to nap at home.

Re: If your toddler doesn't nap..
My DD will be 3 in November. She sleeps a solid 12 hours a night and will go even longer on the few days I don't have to wake her up.
She stopped napping right around when she turned 2.

10-11 hours. Both kids will sleep that amount even on weekends (when they don't have to get up). I saw that chart! No way would my kids sleep that long: they just don't need it: they end up waking earlier if I put them to sleep earlier.

Re: If your toddler doesn't nap..
10-11 hours overnight here too. She dropped her nap around 2. If she naps, she winds up going to bed much later and still waking up the same time. My dr had said not to pay attention to charts, they're just averages and every kid is different.

My does the same. Some nights 12 hours. Most days Im worried she doesn't get enough sleep. =/ Some days she will tell me shes tired but she wont nap. She wont sleep later in the morning. She goes to bed at 730. But there are times where around 4-5 shes so exhausted, I can see it in her eyes. But NOTHING I do makes her sleep more. Ive tried sleep earlier. Sleep later. Try to get her to nap. She wont. Shes 3 now she cut naps at 2. only if she is exhausted beyond belief does she take a nap and that is so rare and far between.

My DD is 3.5. She has never really been too much of a napper......only here and there. She'll go to bed between 8-:8:30pm and then wake at 6. On the weekends when she gets up that early, she'll come into my room (DH is already at the docks fishing by that point) and she'll fall asleep with me until about 7:30ish.

If your toddler doesn't nap..
It depends on the day. My son sleeps anywhere from 9-11 hrs (he just stopped napping and is 3.5). Last night he slept 11 hrs, the night before he slept 9.
He tends to sleep later if there is someplace we're supposed to be.

Re: If your toddler doesn't nap..
Ugh I hate those charts!
My DD never sleeps that much and makes me angry!
She just turned 3 and dropped naps completely. She sleeps 10-11 hours at night. Some days, only 8 or 9.
I always worry that she isnt sleeping enough and/or want to expect her to sleep more (like take a nap so mommy can geez!!) but it seems that 10-11 a night is sufficient for kids.

Re: If your toddler doesn't nap..
She gave up napping at home around age 2 but sleeps in daycare (should I be surprised?!). Anyways, I'm home summers with her and she sleeps 8-7:30-ish. When at school, she sleeps 8-6:45, but with a nap, so either way a little under 12 hours.

Re: If your toddler doesn't nap..
When we are home, I make her lay on the couch for a good 45 minute or so (sometimes with tv, I know it's bad, but it's the only way she will rest a little and I can rest as well)

Re: If your toddler doesn't nap..
Thanks for all the replies. I know every kid is different, but it's helpful to hear some of the ranges.
The big reason I'm concerned is because she is a nightmare to wake up for school, and I think it's because she isn't sleeping enough. She refuses to take naps - even if she's tired. I think it's more of a control thing - she loves saying "I don't take naps anymore"
I've tried reasoning with her and she says she'll go to bed earlier, but then come bedtime she whines and whines and whines. Ugh. Hopefully this will resolve itself over time.

Re: If your toddler doesn't nap..
Haha, they love exerting their power! And they are so illogical! We sometimes have trouble with dd getting her up in the morning. Her new thing is that she wakes up when I open the door and put the hall light on, and she complains that she wants the door shut, and i promise her 2 more minute of sleep (sort of like a snooze alarm). We also use a picture schedule with a photo of potty, toothbrush, clothes, and shoes. She gets to put a sticker on each photo when she's done with each step. She loves the independence and the sticker.

Re: If your toddler doesn't nap..
I understand your concern. I worry about this too.
DD is 2 yrs 2 mos. She generally gets 10 hrs a night, whether she naps or not. Getting her to sleep is a nightmare. Naps are hit or miss but she definitely needs one or is a disaster. I also have a hard time waking her for school. I have heard once they are in school full time, they are more tired and go to bed earlier and sleep longer. Here's hoping!

Re: If your toddler doesn't nap..
11 hours on the dot... Doesn't matter what time we put her to bed. She's about 3.5 and I hear that's a normal amount of time.
