if your DC sleeps on a different floor of the house

DS's bedroom is on the 2nd floor - the living room and DH and my bedroom is on the first. We are going to start putting DS in his bedroom this weekend but i was wondering about naps ...

should we get him to sleep AND nap upstairs, or just sleep? Just seems annoying to (1) have to heat the upstairs all day just for napping purposes and (2) go upstairs and downstairs so many times during the day.

DS is 3.5 months old.

We sleep downstairs and DD sleeps upstairs. We first started having her just sleep upstairs at about four months. Then at about 5.5 months, we did naps up there too. It does seem wasteful to have to heat the upstairs, but since the upstairs is always warmer anyway, we keep the temp lower and I think it probably uses less heat.

As far as going up and down the stairs, it is absolutely annoying. But as she got older the trips got less frequent, which was good. I also thought it was a great idea to gain 85 lbs during pregnancy, so I always tell myself that it's exercise, as I trudge up the tenth time to replace a tossed binky.

I don't get the annoyance w/ having to go up/down a flight of stairs - Even in the middle of the night, is it REALLY that big of a deal? I mean, unless you have a health issue ......

Personally, I think it's good if you can get your child to sleep anywhere and everywhere. - When their own bed is available, they always sleep there - But I have two kids that will nap for 2+ hours in the car, stroller, at the beach - whatever.

We didn't push the napping upstairs (DD's room is upstairs and ours is downstairs), and I totally regret it. DD was a horrible napper for the first year of her life, and I largely blame myself for not putting her in her crib sooner for napping and getting into a routine.

As far as having to go up and down the stairs, yes, it is annoying when they are tiny and wake up all the time. I know I personally am not super functional at 2AM, and getting out of bed is hard enough! DD went through sleep regression at 3.5 months and woke up every hour and would take hours of rocking to get her back in the crib (only to wake up an hour or less later). We moved upstairs to one of the guest bedrooms After we did Ferber with her at 5.5 months, she would sleep through and we moved back down. Now she will wake 1x per night when she is teething, and going up just once isn't so bad.

What would you do for naps if you both slept upstairs at night? When they took naps older ds slept upstairs for his nap and ds #2 slept downstairs because he usually only napped in his stroller (but that is a whole different issue)

Both of our bedrooms are upstairs, but DS still naps downstairs. It's just more convienent because the living room, kitchen, den, laundry are all downstairs. This way I can get stuff done while DS is napping right there. So basically he only sleeps in his crib at night.

Tiny tot sleeps on the same floor as us but on the weekends when it's nap time I put her in her crib. I do this because in the past when I've put her in her pack n play for a nap ( which is in our living room) our shih tzu likes to look out the window and bark at every dog that passes by, which wakes her up. NOT GOOD. She has her own thermosat in her room (which is a plus) and we only put it on when she's in it.

Going up and down the stairs is a PITA!!! Everytime I do it I always get scared that I'm going to trip and drop her

We have a split. We are on the 2rd level and they are on the 2nd. It is a bigger pita than when they were in our room obviously. During the day they are mostly in my office or in their room (same level). When I put them in for a nap and I'm downstairs I just run up and down a lot. It's witching hour and I'm up and down a lot. I joke that I should be skinny since I'm not able to eat a full meal without ot getting cold and I'm constantly running.

We did/do naps and nighttime in the crib, on a different floor. Going up and down the stairs was never an annoyance for me but she was sttn by the time we made the transition.
