if your child had a milk allergy...

how did you know they didn't have it anymore?

the dr told me at 11 months to try food that had cooked milk in it...do I just see how he reacts from there, or do I have to bring him back in for them to test his stook after a few weeks (I forgot to ask this question) Thanks

He gets a skin/scratch test every year. When he has no reaction to that test our allergist said he'd do blood work to confirm, and then we'll do a challenge test in his office.

Andy's test results keep getting worse each year, even though he's been on a complete milk elimination diet since he was an infant. Chat Icon

His ped suggested we see an allergist, but I planned on going anyway. Figured they would be the most familiar with it and give the best advice.

His symptoms were: projectile vomitting, diarreah, bloody mucus in stool, severe eczema (which is an indicator of about 6 possible food allergic reactions - he was tested for all of them by the allergist). I took him to 2 allergists the first year and they both told me that anaphylactic reactions to dairy allergies are very rare, but told me to carry an epi-pen and benedryl just in case.

This is our story as well BUT, my DD can tolerate items that have some dairy and eggs (she has an egg allergy as well). It really depends how much is in it. For example, I do not give her regular mashed potatoes because I know it isn't cooked enough and I put to much milk in it (it tastes gross with soy milk). Even packaged foods, some she does ok with and others not so much.

She had a scratch test done at the allergist when she turned 2, and she no longer had a reaction. We were told to start with foods that had milk as an ingredient and watch for a reaction and she never had oneChat Icon

Re: if your child had a milk allergy...

Thanks everyone

Did anyone just try milk products without having a scratch test done?

Re: if your child had a milk allergy...

My DD never had a scratch test done. She went for her 1 year bloodwork and they tested her for it as well as all other allergies. The test came back negative for it so we began experimenting with milk products.

Her Gi said to wean her slowly on regular similac first. (SHe was on Neocate) She did ok with it until after 8 days she broke out in hives all over.

So, we had to put her back on Neocate for a couple months then tried again. This time I weaned her extremely slow. 1 oz. milk to her 6 oz. Neocate for about 3 weeks and then 2oz. milk 5 oz. Neocate for another 2-3 weeks etc. until she was completely on milk.
This was a success for us and she is now almost 2 1/2 and is great.

Some people wouldn't have patience for what we did but I felt like her little body needed a longer weaning time and it worked. We are very happy.

Re: if your child had a milk allergy...

like some of the other mom's my DS gets a blood test every year and his milk allergy has gotten worse over time. His allergy is very severe. He can't even eat things that don't contain dairy, but are manufacured on shared equipment so I wouldn't dare try giving him anything without testing first. He's also allergic to eggs, but that allergy is much more mild. He's able to eat things with eggs cooked in them so my allergist said I could try to see if he'd tolerate things that are more "eggy" like french toast so I've tried that, but not whole eggs yet. I'd say it depends on how bad the allergy is. what kind of symptoms does he have? if they're just mild you might want to try some and just make sure to have benadryl on hand just in case. The heat involved in cooking denatures the protein so things that are cooked very well and for longer periods of time would be less likely to cause a reaction.

His symptoms when he was younger was blood in his stool, diarrhea, excema, congestion and just being VERY uncomfortable...

do you mind telling me how you knew your son's was so severe?

This was my DD too before Neocate and thank goodness we are lucky she outgrew her allergy by 18 months.

when i was BFing he had really, really bad eczema. My ped didn't want to do an allergy test though so i wasn't 100% sure of the cause although i suspected an allergy. when he was maybe around 9 months i gave him a few spoonfuls of yobaby yogurt (my ped said i could try that) and right away he got hives, runny nose, puffiness and oozing from his eyes. never gave him dairy again!! he only got his first allergy test (the RAST blood test) after i switched peds at 18 months. the test showed i think a moderate-severe allergy at that time and since then the numbers have gone up. back in january my DH accidentally gave him cow's milk instead of soy milk and we ended up in the ER. Chat Icon we've never had the scratch test. i know many kids who've been fine to go on and eat dairy so hopefully that's the case for your little guy!! i'm still keeping my fingers crossed that my DS outgrows this someday. Chat Icon he also has no eczema at all now. he only gets it following an allergic reaction (usually the next day), but otherwise his skin is fine.

I think my son had an intolerence to digesting it not a true allergy. I've tried some foods with milk in them and some yogurt and he seems to be tolerating them OK. I haven't tried cheese yet but I'm planning to. He's 9 months old.
