If your baby sleeps through the night....

My DS is just about to turn 5 months and is a terrible sleeper! He was doing ok for awhile, but then got really bad again. He usually goes down for the night by 11 any earlier he won't stay down. So we do bath, bottle, bed and then he is up at 1:30-2. I go in his room and give him his pacifier and he goes back to sleep, but then soon after is up again. I can only run back and forth so many times before either giving him a bottle or letting him sleep on me on the couch. Even after a night bottle he still wakes up an hour later.....what is the deal?!!!

Sooo here is my list of questions:

-Can you please share in your nightly routine?
-How many oz is in the bedtime bottle, is it more then you normally give during the day?
-Is the room completely quiet and dark?
-Do they sleep on their back or on their side?

Feel free to add anything else because I need sleeeeeep!Chat Icon

Re: If your baby sleeps through the night....

hmm...i would first look at his daytime feeding schedule. that was the first thing we did - was stretch the time between his daytime feedings to get him used to longer stretches without bottles. once he was doing that, the sleep kind of fell into place.

we weren't giving him any more formula at night than during daytime feedings.

logan's room was completely dark for the first few months, but around 4-5 months we added a nightlight because he would sometimes wake up, chat with himself, then fall back asleep, so i didn't want him to get scared (i don't even know if he would have).

sorry i don't have more helpful advice, but definitely take a closer look at his daytime schedule first. i also read the book "twelve hours by twelve weeks" and modified it to what i was comfortable with. he's been STTN since about 3/3.5 months...7pm-7am.

Re: If your baby sleeps through the night....

DD is 7.5 months, but started STTN at 3 months, then regressed for a while, during a growth spurt. Her routine has always been:

dinner (bottle or food depending on age)
Playtime
Bath at 7ish
bottle (regular size)
then bed by 8:15 the latest!

I take my cues from her, when she rubs her eyes, it's crib time. I put her down and she rolls onto her tummy and goes to sleep. She actually has a hard time falling asleep unless she's in her crib or PnP.

We did CIO, last month, when she was waking again after a few nights of teething, which I think you may benefit from. Only needed 2 nights and longest she cried was 12 minutes.

I also put like 5 paci's in her crib, so when she wakes up, wherever she is in the crib, she can find one and put it in herself.

Does he fall asleep in the crib? What is his nap schedule? how many ounces total is he eatihng throughout the day?

Re: If your baby sleeps through the night....

11 is really late for a 5 month old to go to sleep. Do you rock DS to sleep or does he fall asleep on his own? I had to start CIO at 5.5 months and lots of ladies suggested an earlier bed time. So we do

7pm-bath
745-8pm-bottle 8oz with 4 tsp of cereal
and then put him in his crib he cries for like 15 mins but is usually OUT by 830. He does whine like once at like 130 but I let him whine and he eventually falls back to sleep in like 5 minutes. If I didn't so CIO I would still be getting up 5-6 times a night!

Re: If your baby sleeps through the night....

What are his naps like and when does he eat during the day? At that age DD was definitely already in a bedtime routine (bed at 8pm and STTN about 11-12 hours).

ETA his room is completely black and I put him on his side but he ends up on his knees with his butt in the air.

Re: If your baby sleeps through the night....

he usually wants to eat every 2hrs, but i've been trying to stretch that out. He is drinking 5oz bottles throughout the day and 2tbsp of cereal w/a half jar of fruit in the morning and again at night. He takes a few 20-40 min naps throughout the day.

Re: If your baby sleeps through the night....

honestly, it might be time to get tough!

how many ounces throughout the day?

this was our DS - he would go down at 730 and sleep until 1. Wake up crying. We would give him his paci and then he would be up 4-7 more times for the stupid paci Chat Icon

At 5.5 (almost 6 months) we did CIO. We could NOT continue getting up every 45 mins to give him his paci and we knew he could sleep through the night b/c he had done it many times.

It took one night of CIO and now he sleeps through everynight. Last night he woke at 12 and cried for 10 mins and then slept until 630!

How many oz does he take during the day?

ETA - DS takes 4 bottles at 6 months

630 am (8oz)
9am fruit
11am (7-8oz bottle)
330pm (7-8oz bottle)
6pm veggie
730 (6oz bottle)

we stopped cereal, hated it!

bedtime routine -
645 bath
get ready for bed
book and bottle in his room at 730
into the crib on his side or back and he STTN until 630

no he is FF, I know that is a BF schedule and he should be eating every 4hrs or so....I've tried to up the amount of formula, but he throws up after a certain amount, it took a few weeks to get him up to 5oz! He is growing and gaining as he should so the doc wasnt too concerned.

So how many ounces and bottles a day is he getting? is he on solids?

Try pushing each bottle like 15 minutes...and then 15 minutes the next day that is what I had to do with DS. As you push it you will eventually up the hours and then you can up the amount of ounces.

Re: If your baby sleeps through the night....

DD will be 5 months next week and has been STTN since 8 weeks.

We start her nighttime routine at 6:30pm which is a bath, book and bottle. We do the book and bottle in her glider in her room. We turn down the lights and only have her nightlight on when we get to the bottle. I usually rock her for about 10 minutes after her bottle. Once she goes to her crib, she is out for the night (by 7:30pm).

The bedtime bottle is 7 ounces and she usually finishes it. Her overall feeding schedule during the day is:
7am - 7oz bottle
8am - 1 TBSP Oatmeal Cereal
11am - 5oz bottle
3pm - 7oz bottle
5pm - 1TBSP Barley Cereal
7pm - 7oz bottle

Her room is definitely quiet. We keep a small nightlight on all night in the event she wakes up and talks/plays for a bit before falling back asleep.

She always sleeps on her back. She started to turn over last week but still always sleeps on her back.

Hope this helps - good luck!

My DS didnt STTN til 5.5 months and we had the SAME routine from 2 weeks old. lol.

Bedtime routine: bath, bottle and bed. During his bottle all the lights are off and sesame street in on t.v. he usually finishes his bottle and plays a little but as soon as elmo's world ends he is on his way to bed.

Ozs: At 5 months old DS was having 4 8z bottles. Usually about 7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm. At 8 months he dropped his afternoon bottle.

DS sleeps with white noise and a fan on. The white noise has a light on it. The fan is on the floor facing parallel to the bed. When I bring DS in the room its dark. He has a pacifier too. I turn on the white noise, then the fan and then his crib soother to the "classic" setting (middle button on the front). I place him on his bed but he NEVER stays that way. Turns and moves all over the crib.

he has the precious planet soother but its the same thing as this one:

External Image

I also weaned him off the overnight bottle at 5 months. He was waking up at 12-1am for it so every night I cut it by an ounce til he was completely off of it.

I sort of CIOed. If he was crying I'd get him but if it was just whining I let him go.

Good luck.

seriously, thats it! they are creatures of habit! my DS was STTN for about a month and then i went and stayed overnight at my sister's on saturday. DS hated the pack and play so he slept in bed with me.

last night, he was up crying at 12! i thought maybe he pooped so i went in and he was ALL smiles ... he just wanted attention. its amazing how quickly then can revert ... i was with him the night before so he was looking for me again.

at 5-6 months, they KNOW that crying will get them attention! Chat Icon

Re: If your baby sleeps through the night....

at 5m

-Can you please share in your nightly routine?
It was an hour long routine.
20 minutes of tummy time with baby Einstein.
bath, bottle, lullaby, binkie, lovey, run on mobile, turn on sound machine and we close the door.

-How many oz is in the bedtime bottle, is it more then you normally give during the day?

Nope exactly the same. He'd take a little more when he was really tired.

-Is the room completely quiet and dark?
The sound machine plays waterfall, really loud, the room is dark.

-Do they sleep on their back or on their side?
DS slept on his side clutching his lovey.

He went through a phase where he would wake up for pacifier. I actually found that if I let him whine for 1-2 minutes and then offer it to him, it would keep him from dropping it too soon later.

Re: If your baby sleeps through the night....

it was around the 7 month mark we did a little CIO, which helped him sleep for longer stretches until shortly thereafter he started STTN.

we do bottle (8oz since 5-6mos which is more than one feeding during the day), bath then bed. pediatrician recommended it this way so he won't get accustomed to "eating" right before bed.

room has a teeny night light far from the crib. we set the noise machine to a "lullaby" for 30 mins...during the time we get him ready to go down for the night, and keep an air purifier fan on all night which emits a smooth sound that drowns out most other noises.

i'm not "supposed to" but i do nurse him to the point of a deep drowse before laying him in his crib. i lay him on his back and he almost always turns to his side and drifts. when my DH or mom put him down, they either rock him in a cradle or put him over their shoulder (which i've done too), and put him down this way.
