if your 9-10 month old throws things...

what do you do?

they are too young for discipline, but seem to be purposely doing it to get a reaction? what do you do or say?

sometimes its so funny, i bust out laughing. I dont want to but can't help it. other times, its not so funny, like when she grabs holds of my cell phone and chucks it. She knows what shes doing, she looks me square in the face and throws it without even looking at the object. Other times she will throw it and then look up at me to see my reaction. I say "dont do that" or "Stop" and never give her the object back. Then again, i often think shes just exploring and i should let her until shes old enough to understand better? So, what to do?

Re: if your 9-10 month old throws things...

DS doesnt throw things, but he does like to touch everything he isnt suppose to (loves turning on the playstation and playing with the cord on my laptop and the cat's food and water bowl). We tell him "Noooooo" in a strong serious voice. He understands and will stop and scrunch his face that he is mad and will sometimes whine, cry. Its not 100% because he is only 10 months old and many times will whine and then go back and touch it again. Chat Icon so we repeat "noooo".

I will also walk over and remove him from the object he is touching and say "noooo"

I think you are just going to have to be consistant, at this age nothing is going to be 100% successful. When you see her trying to throw it say no and take it away or put it down.

It's an annoying phase hahahaha
I try to ignore it. She's learning but when I do address it, I say no sternly or don't throw that.
It does drive me crazy.

i get that way too...letting him explore. and we do, sometimes. but being persistent and stern has worked, especially with the tv and treadmill. and as much as we say not to throw things, he will do it if he's frustrated enough still, so that's a work in progress.

Its a phase and they do eventually grow out of it. we try to ignore it for the most part, but that doesn't always work either. We're at the throwing and hitting phase right now. fun

Our "rule" was "we don't throw {toys} we throw kisses, muh!

When DS was younger, we'd say it to him, hold up what he threw and say no throw.

When he started talking, we'd ask him if we throw {toys} - what do we throw.

My 9 month old is very into this lately.
What I do normally is just leave it on the floor.
If she throws a toy out of her pack n play or high chair- it stays there and she doesnt' get it back.

Because when I would give it back to her- she'd throw it again- and it turns into a game.

I used to say, "no you can't throw this, but you can throw this soft toy" and when he does throw the right thing I give him the reaction he's looking for... but key
to anything you do is consistency, they are learning what the rules are, they are testing everything.

If he chooses wrong one, ill get to his level hold his hand and say "mommy doesn't want you to throw this"

Eta: I do something similar at the high chair, but the rules are you can't throw, but you can put food in cup/ table... or drink in cup holder.

Giving options really cuts down on the noise for us.

DS has been doing this also. He is 9.5 months. Drives me crazy. I will pick it up once or twice but then thats it. My oldest DS gets suckered into picking it up and it becomes the longest game of throwing the cup from the high chair. Chat Icon Chat Icon
